Sydney is the place to be this January as the whole city bursts into life for the 40th annual Sydney festival.
From contemporary dance giants to huge bands like The Flaming Lips, many of the festival’s 157 events are free – 89 in fact. Pop up art installations will take over Darling Harbour and Bangaroo Reserve while you’ll be able to get the best view of a new video piece of work by flying down a giant zip line also in the reserve.
Sydney Chamber Orchestra are working with European director Pierre Audi to rework Monteverdi’s l’Orfeo, new Australian opera The Rabbits will be premiered as will Cut the Sky a new work by Broome’s acclaimed dance company that investigates relationships with the landscape of Australia.
If that’s not enough there’s also Family Week, a folk music series of Sundays, a huge fairground and photo exhibitions. Phew!
