Alternative braided ponytail

Messy ponytails and tiny braids were seen at the Alice + Olivia spring 2016 show. Hairstylist Marshall Lin wove models’ hair into side braids that spilled into beachy tails. “Once the hair is back, you can keep teasing and adding more braids,” said Lin. Make you have beach waves and braid side sections then create a messy ponytail in the centre of your head. Add the side braids to the ponytail, wrapping one around it tightly to secure it. Make sure there is height on the crown of the head and plait smaller braids to create an even cooler effect.

Low braided ponytail

The new braided ponytails work on all hair textures and, even better, require very little dexterity. Enter Celine SS16. To avoid a sad, skinny tail, mist texturising spray over the length of dry hair. Create a little separation by raking a sculpting paste through your roots. Start with a tight, low ponytail at the nape and secure with a black elastic, then go into a three-strand braid. Use hair spray to tame any frizz.

Teased ponytail

This romantic messy low slung ponytail is an ideal summer hairstyle. It is perfect for beach weddings and it is easier than you’d think. For the LC Lauren Conrad show, hairstylist Kristin Ess secured models’ hair into low ponytails, sprinkled texturising powder on top of their heads and gently loosened the perimeter near the hairline. Allow for a little bit of fallout to soften the look. To add height and chic elegance, create teasing at the crown before pulling your hair back.

Asymmetrical barrettes

A gilded flower barrette is a pretty hair accessory for an effortless hairstyle. Vintage-inspired gold and silver barrettes adorned tresses at Rodarte SS16. Odile Gilbert affixed barrettes to models’ hairlines. “We dried the hair with our hands to give it a natural feeling, then put the barrettes a little lower or higher than normal, or maybe two on one side. We wanted it to be a bit strange. Normally you’d wear it at the temple, so we move it lower or higher, or maybe we put two on one side, or one across the bangs.” Try it, and your ladylike barrette becomes instantly contemporary and glam.

Create texture and prep damp hair with mousse and leave-in conditioner. To get the look, wrap small sections around a medium-size curling iron from the mid-lengths to the ends. Weave a small, tight braid behind each ear and pull them horizontally across the back of the head, tucking the ends under and pinning them in place. Drape a beaded headpiece over the braids, sliding bobby pins on either side to keep it secure, but an old necklace (especially a piece of vintage costume jewellery) could look really gorgeous too.
