Movie royalty are descending on Dubai next month for the annual Dubai International Film Festival, including Sir Patrick Stewart.

DIFF celebrates international and regional cinema with 140 movie screenings across the city, A-list crowd, red carpet events, workshops and gala dinners. This year it welcomes big names such as Sir Patrick Stewart to honour his lifetime contribution to the industry, as well as Cate Blanchett as a jury member for the IWC Filmmaker Award panel.

With variety of film genres, this is one of the leading platforms for Arabic cinema with 59 showcases viewed throughout the eight-day festival that aims to shine a light on the regional talent – both in front of and behind the camera.

Abdulhamid Juma, chairman of DIFF, said: “We bring around 4,000 people who love, talk and breathe cinema, and we’re bringing that to the city. If you don’t want to go to the mall to a cinema, and want to be at the beach, film will find you there.”

For those with a particular interested in costume design are in luck as on December 9 BAFTA and Swarovski will host a master class with Alexandra Byrne, Oscar-winning costume designer behind major films such as Hamlet, Thor and recently released Murder on the Orient Express.

Film Hostiles starring Christian Bale will kick things off at Madinat Jumeirah on December 6, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi will close the festival on December 13 – two days before the global release.

A starring lineup indeed.
