Linda Bruun Lacin, founding designer of the Dubai-based brand December Nineteen brings Scandi-cool to the desert with her pieces that are all you need for laid back elegance. Meet your new minimalist wardrobe.
Take us on the journey that led to what is known as December Nineteen today.
I’ve been living and working in the fashion industry in the Middle East for 8 years now – and let’s just say that it’s been a constant battle and confusion of whether to wear daytime embellishments or just throw on something black with a cap. December Nineteen is still taking very careful baby steps, but I hope with time that the brand will reflect the best of both worlds. For now, I’m just a confused Scandinavian girl roaming around the Middle East.
Tell us more about the production process at DEC19; what are the materials used and where do you produce everything?
It’s all about redefining classic styles and cuts, updating them in the best possible fabrics and fit whilst being wearable to almost anyone at any age. We produce most of our collections in either Portugal or Turkey, but we’re also trying to support local businesses and craftsmanship by producing what is possible right here in the UAE.
What triggered you into becoming a fashion designer?
I’ve lived in Dubai for the past 8 years and felt a gap in the market for premium quality minimalistic clothing. I’m also very eager to see Middle Eastern style in a more subtle way.
Your work is known to be quite simple, what attracts you the most about minimalism?
The first collection is called ‘The Introduction’ and that’s just what it is – we are introducing some of our core fits and styles which are very minimalistic but expect to see more colors and interesting approaches to some of the most iconic styles. However when that is said, December Nineteen will never be over the top or “extra” and whatever we do will always be done in a minimalistic and subtle way. The beauty about minimalism is that you are wearing the clothes, it’s not the clothes that wear you, the personality and individual style shines through.
How does being based in an Arab region inspire your work?
Again it’s really the core DNA of the brand – The Middle Eastern modest style wrapped in a Scandinavian contemporary packaging.
What makes you stand out among other designers in the region?
It’s difficult to say as there are so many talented designers in the region but we believe in what we do and we believe that we can make a difference in the way women in the region dress.
Name one major fashion pet peeve that you can’t tolerate.
I actually have two: Sleeveless turtlenecks and studio fashion shoots with models wearing sunglasses – we all know the sun is not shining there!
Who is the DEC19 woman?
The December Nineteen woman is a perfectionist, she prefers quality over quantity and her wardrobe reflects that. She has high demands on quality and expects to be comfortable and on point throughout the day.
If you were a city what city would you be?
Paris longing for Bali.
Name a song you have on repeat on your iPod.
The Eurythmics – all songs, all day.
What’s your life motto?
“It is okay to live a life others don’t understand” Charles Bukowski
What is next for December Nineteen in the year 2018?
In 2018 we’re focusing a lot on the international market and as we’re working on our SS19 things are heating up a bit, we are becoming more brave and more confident. Collections will expand and we are bringing back some iconic classics in an interesting color scheme.

On Our Radar: Zyne
Over the last few seasons sneakers have officially overtaken any must-have bags or backless mules and our feet are grateful. Now, there are some ugly ducklings on offer, but we promise they will make you look like a style swan.
Thanks to the genius of Nicolas Ghesquière, who manages to turn every piece in each of his collections into a must-buy, we now have some very ugly, chunky, dad-like sneakers to add to our shopping list. He introduced the Archlight sneaker during the SS18 show and they went viral. Why? Bulky sole and a quirky silhouette have an instant cool-girl factor and, believe it or not, the shape can make you look taller.
At first glance you may struggle to come up with outfit ideas that can compliment these experimental sneakers, but the oversized proportions work great with feminine dresses and mini skirts as they add masculinity to an otherwise girly look. They will always be in good company with straight leg cropped jeans as well as angular skirts and cropped wide leg trousers.
Now what will it be? Louis Vuitton Archlight, Balenciaga Triple S Sportschuhe or Stella McCartney Eclypse? Click through our edit above to decide.

The Fashion Month is upon us which means it’s time to give your wardrobe a shake up with our top street style trends.
February schedule is not for the faint hearted with the temperatures below what is considered reasonable for bare legs and thin layers, which makes it a perfect excuse to jump on board with the puffer jacket trend. Take it from sporty to couture with bold shapes, oversized fit, bright colours and unique detail.
For another chic outerwear choice, look to teddy bear coats and faux fur jackets that instantly elevate any outfit.
While you cover up for warmth, let accessories be the stars. We can guarantee that beret’s and newsboy caps will be making an appearance as well as micro sunglasses that were spotted on the SS18 runways for Miu Miu and Prada.
Thanks to Chloé, Dries Van Noten, and Givenchy we will be storing away our stilettos in favor of statement boots (especially cowboy) while Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga bring us ugly cool sneakers. As for bags, geometric shapes seen at Celine and Dolce & Gabbana will dominate as well as decorative patterns that Proenza Schouler and Marni applied to their bags turning them into wearable pieces of art.
Warm up the winter blues with one of our favourite colour combinations – pink and burgundy. These feminine hues work perfectly together delivering a grown up yet playful look, especially when you take it one step further by mixing shapes and textures.
Now go and rock the streets of Fashion Week.

Dior have released a new book of couture images captured by fashion photographer Paolo Roversi.
Dior Images Paolo Roversi is a collaboration between the couture house with leading creative Roversi and documents a series of iconic pictures taken by the photographer and published in leading fashion magazines over the last 27 years. The collection of images features models including Naomi Campbell, Natalia Vodianova and Laetitia Casta.
In addition to archive images, the book exclusively reveals a selection of Christian Dior’s most beautiful designs, photographed during a session that famous stylist Grace Coddington worked on.
A native of Ravenna in Italy, Paolo Roversi arrived in Paris in 1973. He discovered the work of Richard Avedon and Irving Penn and went on to meet Robert Frank, Guy Bourdin and Helmut Newton. In the 1990s, he began to photograph Haute Couture creations for prestigious magazines such as Vogue Paris, Vogue Italia, British Vogue and W. Paolo Roversi has spent over forty years creating a remarkable and profoundly poetic body of work. His skilful use of Polaroid film combined with a large-format camera underpins a highly sensitive view of women, helping to create the fragile grace that makes his style immediately recognisable. His frequent use of blurs evokes the origins of fashion photography and removes the dividing line between the models’ bodies and the world that surrounds them.
Watch the interview below to discover further inspiration behind the latest book.

Burberry have released a 200-song playlist on Apple Music to celebrate the brands most memorable moments from the last 17 years.
With the brands long-standing relationship with music and the famous live performances during the fashion shows, events and musical collaborations, the playlist gives fans a chance to enjoy the sounds that have shaped the houses history.
“Music has influenced me profoundly from a very young age and has always been an emotive companion in my life,” says Christipher Bailey. “This passion has resulted in me having a wide and varying taste in music with a particular love for British artists, both new and old. It is something I go back to constantly as a source of inspiration – from providing the soundscapes to our shows, to live performances at our events, to recording music videos of the newest musicians at the very beginning of their careers.”
17 Years of Soundtracks has been curated by Bailey and include artists like Adele, Pet Shop Boys, Elton John, The Cure, Dusty Springfield, Elvis Costello as well as George Ezra and Tom Odell and will soon have the latest song from designers final Burberry show on Saturday 17 February.
Bailey adds: “’17 Years of Soundtracks’ is the perfect way to celebrate the incredible roster of musicians that have helped shape my time at Burberry, be it directly through exclusive recordings, or through lending their songs as the backdrop to our experiences. This patchwork of tracks is a musical tribute to Burberry’s past, present and future, which I hope will not only introduce new music to audiences but also allow for some musical rediscovery.”
After 17-years as Chief Creative Officer and President at the British fashion house, Bailey will exit at the end of March. The soundtrack is available on Apple iTunes now.

“I know that my own years of training on ice and off, made me painfully aware of the need for comfort, ease, and stretch. Weight also becomes a factor when one has to perform for an extended period of time and a wide range of motion. Each sport is different and technical but for me all factors have to be taken into consideration,” she said.

Haider Ackermann’s Berluti FW18 collection is an easy-going representation of a self-assured modern man.
“In a world that is louder than ever, I like the idea of a quiet man. Serene, cool, collected, yet standing on his own two feet.”
The collection is packed with timeless wardrobe staples like nylon jackets that have been handcrafted from a single piece of fabric along with leather coats with invisible seams creating a sleek look. Despite their classic appearance, Ackermann adds touches of personality through flashes of colour and detail in the linings, an unexpected wink to eccentricity. Echoing Berluti’s unmistakable elegance, leather trench coat is lined in grey cashmere, while an understated reversible black cashmere coat reveals ivory silk pinstripes on the inside.
Japanese brushed cashmere creates unusually soft sweaters, and hand-cut velvet gives an artisanal touch to trousers and suits. Tailoring is structured yet lighter than ever, foregoing shoulder pads for a relaxed fit.
“As time goes by, the wearer’s personality becomes embedded in the clothes so that they become intimate and filled with emotion,” says desingner.
Accessories include weekender bags and backpacks, each assembled from two pieces of calf leather. A new shoe, the Alessandro 0 Cut, is an entirely seamless exercise in bootmaking know-how and brings attitude to the season’s silhouette with a slightly elevated heel. Ankle boots in Venezia leather and in crocodile are an evolution from last season’s cowboy boots and feature a decorative seam that catches the eye.

Healthy eating not going to plan? We don’t blame you, dieting is a tough discipline and can be extremely boring, but we have a solution.
Some thrive on cutting out sugar, fat and carbs but for mere mortals it’s not that easy. It’s even worst when you have a friend who doesn’t restrict herself and seems to be in perfectly good shape – frustrating we know but there is something we can learn from these happy bunch of women that have deleted the world ‘diet’ from their vocabulary.
They skip the low-fat or low-calorie aisle because they know that these so called ‘diet’ foods or drinks have to compromise somewhere. They only taste good because the manufacturer swaps the fat for sugar or salt which actually contribute to weight gain so read the label carefully.
Healthy lifestyle sometimes has nothing to do with eating but with how we relax. Sleep has become key in establishing a good relationship with food so get in the hours to avoid cranky snacking.
Never deny yourself. If you want that all-butter croissant then have it, otherwise you’ll obsess over it and end up eating a whole box of them. Don’t feel bad about an indulgence either, one burger is not going to knock you off your health path.
Start cooking as this is a great way to know exactly what goes into your favourite dishes and gives you an opportunity to add or reduce certain ingredients. If you’ve seen some vegan recipes, you’ll notice that they are packed with spices that add a punch of flavour to otherwise slightly dull dishes so add smoke paprika, turmeric and cumin to your grocery list.
Sugar is one of the hardest things to give up so don’t – instead be smart about it. As comforting as it is to reach for a box of cookies, try having some fruit (dry or fresh) carrot sticks, freshly squeezed juices or nuts and if after that you still need a fix, then one or two won’t hurt. We are also fans of making energy balls so get that food processor mixing some dates, fruit and seeds.
