Bvlgari Unveils the New B.Zero1 Rock Collection at New York Fashion Week

Bvlgari’s latest jewellery offering the latest edition of the B.Zero1 Rock collection was presented in New York as part of New York Fashion Week. The third generation of the B.Zero1 Rock collection is a celebration of the fierce and indomitable spirit of the Roman jeweller.

The contemporary collection was inspired by the Bvlgari Tubogas choker with studs dating back to the eighties. A symbol of self-expression the collection for women and men is cool and sharp in its design, representing independence and individuality.

The original Bzero1 collection featured spiral lines, inspired by Rome’s Colosseum. These spiral lines meet the edgy geometry of studs to create a sharp and bold collection. The pieces are unisex meaning they can be worn by both men and women in different expressions.

The chains, bracelets and earrings combine yellow gold and diamonds while experimenting with technology by injecting black ceramic in a rose gold version. The pieces are engraved with the Bvlgari double-logo. Pendants with geometric chains are empowering and bold.

The collection launched in New York as part of New York Fashion Week. Hosted by Group CEO Jean-Christophe Babin the launch event also saw the unveiling of the house’s latest muses.

Zendaya

Supermodel Lily Aldridge, British actress and singer Naomi Scott and American star Zendaya are to be the faces of Bvlgari’s MAI TROPPO 2020 Bvlgari Brand Campaign which encapsulates the jeweller’s ethos of living life to the fullest.

Celine’s Summer Bags Feature Fresh Colours and Styles

Celine’s two signature bag styles have had a fresh update for the Spring as part of the Spring/Summer 2020 collection, designed by Hedi Slimane. We discover more below.

CELINE CAMARAT

This new bag design takes inspiration from the sixties, in particular, 1967 and a belt with a classic signature style from the Celine archive. At the time the belt was a staple of actresses including Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin, Jane Fonda and Jacqueline Bizet and this modern interpretation is features a contemporary twist on the design as it is reimagined into a bag.

The name of the bag nods to Saint Tropez where the Celine woman has been taken for this season. “Camarat” comes from “Cap Camarat” a headland in the south of Saint Tropez, in the town of Ramatuelle. For the spring season, the bag comes in seasonal animations with special details including tan fringes and shearling.

CELINE MAILLON TRIOMPHE

The Maillon Triomphe was first introduced during the Winter 2019 show last year and it has been further developed for the Summer 2020 collection. It features a key signature design inspired by Celine archives including the House’s historic monogram which was first revealed in 1972. The monogram which has been reintroduced by Hedi Slimane is a link motif inspired by the chain encircling the iconic Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

This season the Maillon Triomphe comes in seasonal interpretations including with a scarf incorporated into the design and our favourite a floral jacquard style. The Maillon Triomphe revisits Slimane’s inspiration from the seventies which can be seen throughout the ready-to-wear collection.

Paris Fashion Week: Armani Privé Spring/Summer 2020

For the Spring/Summer 2020 Armani Privé Haute Couture collection the designer collection delved into the world of ikat, a special kind of dyeing technique that was introduced into the fashion industry in the sixties.

Armani created garments that catch the eye with their creative patterns and decorative details.

Each piece is designed to be a gesture of joy while evoking the elegance and sophistication we know and love from Armani.

It was all about details. Embroideries, prints, crystal-encrusted tulle, beading and more made these garments exquisite, while the use of taffeta, embroidered tulle and lightweight crinoline created volume and lightness.

Cigarette trousers paired with chic one-button blazers. Prints contrasted with simple separates. Simple was juxtaposed with texture to create a contrast. Silhouettes were slim and fitted while there was a nod to the 1920s thanks to the short-cropped wigs.

The colour palette comprised of green, cornflower blue, fuchsia, red and black. Bold colours were paired with gold and neutral tones to add highlights.

A truly wearable collection for the sophisticated woman of today.

Paris Fashion Week: Chanel Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2020

Chanel transformed Paris’ Grand Palais into a beautiful garden inspired by Gabrielle Chanel’s childhood for the Spring/Summer 2020 Haute Couture show at Paris Fashion Week.

The particular garden that was the source of inspiration? The Abbey of Aubazine, a place where Gabrielle Chanel spent much of her childhood and whose elements became an inspiration from some of her designs.

Virginie Viard reimagined these elements and channelled them into contemporary Haute Couture designs. A traditional school girl’s outfit inspired some of the looks with straight dresses in two-tone wool or tweed, flat pleats, braided belts and embellished collars. Looks were finished with jewelled buttons set with flowers or trimmed with braids.

We saw classic Chanel tweed on full skirts, dresses and suits worn with tights and socks as if mimicking school girls. Finished with oversized colours and double-breasted fastenings, blazers were worn with straight skirts some of which were layered with tulle.

Mid-way through the show, the monochrome colour palette gave way to soft pastel tones with pink and blue shades breaking up the black and white ensembles.

Dresses with floral details in the form of lace and embellishments were layered with silk tulle petticoats.

The final look; the wedding dress came in crepe georgette and was enhanced with a triple Peter Pan collar in tulle and veil embroidered with branches of wisteria. The dress was short and simple and signified a moment of modernity.

Arab couturiers brought elegance and colour to the runways this couture week – we discover more of what the Arab region is bringing to the world of Haute Couture for Spring/Summer 2020

Elie Saab

For his Spring/Summer 2020 Haute Couture collection Elie Saab presented a regal display inspired by the opulence of Mexico.

In true Elie Saab style, it was far from minimal and celebrated the female form in every way.

Golden shimmering gowns, florals, petals, baroque swirls, embellishments rosettes and bows – you name it the Lebanese designer had it! There were complex looks with layer upon layer of details but they paved the way for simple elegance in the form of one colour gowns.

A truly feminine collection that reminded us once again why the designer is one of the best in his field.

Rami Al Ali

Dubai based designer and friend of A&E Rami Al Ali presented his spring/summer 2020 Haute Couture collection in Paris yesterday. Al Ali was inspired by the beauty of the orchid and the way it symbolises strength. The orchid for Al Ali symbolises couture – the way it looks almost handmade but is so intricate and beautiful.

Rami Al Ali Spring/Summer 2020 Haute Couture

For this colourful collection, Al Ali encapsulated the spirit of couture with each look featuring exaggerated design techniques and strong architectural silhouettes. Each design brings light to a core focal point that stands out – be it a sculptural bow or exaggerated waist. The colour palette is bold and bright – lime green, turquoise, coral and rose are highlighted by gold accents. Finishing touches come from intricate beadwork and clusters that mimic the details of the flower.

Tony Ward

Tony Ward’s Spring/Summer 2020 Haute Couture collection Revive is built around geometry. Infinite lines and circles on Mandala diagrams create visual symmetry. Ward created each of his looks from vintage pieces reusing vintage materials and reviving the to create something that’s contemporary. Feathers, embellishment, beady and ruffles brought all of the techniques that Ward is known for to the runway with a colour palette ranging from monochrome styles to soft pastel tones.

Georges Hobeika

Georges Hobeika loves to have fun with his designs. His Spring/Summer 2020 Haute Couture collection was no different. Bringing together some of the designer’s favourite inspirations: the force of nature, the ecstasy of freedom and the philosophy of entertainment. Bold flowers, bright colours and voluptuous volume pay homage to summers in the Mediterranean. Laser-cut openwork patterns feature daring geometric shapes and fabrics are overlaid and placed in unique ways. Big bows, feathers, ruffles, sequins – nothing was missed out in this collection that brought some fun to the runway and some sunshine to a gloomy Paris.

Georges Chakra

For his Spring/Summer 2020 collection Georges Chakra was inspired by his home country of Lebanon. He brings together the energy of Lebanon and its youth’s desire for freedom and their rights. Taking into consideration the current political issues in the country Chakra wanted to acknowledge the way it has affected his own company and the team member of his House but channel it in a unique way.

Georges Chakra Spring Summer 2020

Chakra worked with the rose motif, a theme that runs through the entire collection. The collection begins with striking white looks but is later broken up with bold electrifying colours. Origami embroideries, voluminous layers, clean geometry, fabrics scattered with features and sequins and pearls make up the many layers of this collection.

Georges Chakra Spring Summer 2020

In honour of his friendship with the renowned jewellery designer Fawaz Gruosi, a necklace was presented on the runway.  Celebrating love and hope, the necklace adorning the brides neck (below)  is white gold set with 46 pear-shaped emeralds (approx. 57.15 Ct), 45 brilliant-cut white diamonds (approx. 8.00 Ct) and paved with 3’274 brilliant-cut white diamonds (approx. 116,95 Ct).  Proceeds from the sale of the necklace will be donated to the Beirut‘s Children Cancer Hospital and the scholastic scholarships of St. Vincent de Paul School.

Dior Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2020

“What if Women ruled  the world?” This was the question plastered on the wall at Dior’s spring/summer Haute Couture show in Paris yesterday and also the basis of inspiration for Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri.

A self-acclaimed feminist, Chiuri is known for posing bold statements and questions through her shows and this season was no different.

The Creative Director took inspiration from iconic American artist Judy Chicago who asked the exact same question through her artwork. A proud feminist, Chicago was a pioneer of her time, highlighting the idea of femininity through her work.

The collection itself was a presentation of elegance. Taking inspiration from Ancient Greek times the drape became a key element to Chiuri’s designs which she combined with Dior’s codes. The designer modernised classic representations of goddesses and bad theme wearable for today.

There was a key hue of gold running through the designs which shone on the runway. The collections key motif – ears of wheat were designed to recall women’s creative force.

We saw a new interpretation of the classic Dior Bar jacket, this time in rich gold with a matching skirt.

Evening dresses were goddess-like and paired with gladiator sandals, signifying power and strength. Floaty materials and long draping capes were almost superhero-like, while tassels, layering and origami-style pleats added a feminine touch to the looks.

Models wore crowns, headbands and strong statement gold jewellery that took inspiration from ancient body armour.

This strong and bold collection shone a light once again on Maria Grazia Chiuri’s vision to empower women through fashion.

Alaïa and Balenciaga present the Sculptors of Shape Exhibition

Under the direction of Olivier Saillard Alaïa and Balenciaga presents the Sculptors of Shape exhibition in Paris, a celebration of the work of Azzedine Alaïa and Cristobal Balenciaga which features alongside each other for the first time.

Beginning this January a unique exhibition will display iconic designs from the archives of the two designers in a special setting in Paris. For the first time works from both couturiers will set alongside each other as a celebration of their Haute Couture creations.

Around 80 pieces will be presented in the heart of the Alaïa couture house which also houses the Association created to watch over his memory and work. This exhibition was the wish of Hubert de Givenchy. A few months after the death of Azzedine Alaïa, decades after the death of Balenciaga, of whom he was a firm admirer, Givenchy, one of the last great guardians of fashion’s collective memory.

When Cristobal Balenciaga decided to close his Maison in 1968 for him it was the end of an era. But some years later designer Azzedine Alaïa was invited to come to the house and re-work some of the designs, giving them a new contemporary appearance. But when he saw the garments Alaïa was so astonished by what was in front of him that his immediate reaction was that he cannot modify these incredible creations. Alaïa scooped carefully laid out the garments and swore that for the rest of his life, he would ensure that the masters of cut who had come before him would not be forgotten.

Just a few months before he died, Azzedine Alaïa recounted this story with fondness. He would cultivate a deep respect for fashion history throughout his life, and he considered this encounter with Balenciaga to be his first real awakening to its’ importance.

Since the late 60s, when many of his contemporaries were investing only in contemporary and modern art, his focus was on garments that featured specific techniques. He was passionate about dresses from the 30s and the 50s that others discarded with the past. He accumulated pieces by the great masters in whose footsteps he planned to follow. At first by the hundreds, then by the thousands, Azzedine Alaïa surrounded himself with dresses by Grès, Vionnet, Schiaparelli, and again Balenciaga, amongst others.

As the decades passed, he became recognized as the last Couturier, the only one to still master every stage of a garment’s design and fabrication, cutting with the same dexterity possessed by his predecessors, pinning and sewing better still.

But it was Balenciaga that remained Alaïa’s biggest inspiration. The two couturiers continued o share a perfect balance of measurements and volumes and a love for muted colours and rich blacks. Their architectural designs and bold structured forms mirror each other but each has its unique style.

The Exhibition will run from Monday, January 20th to Sunday, June 28th, 2020, Hôtel de Ville, Paris. Following on from Paris, the exhibition will then travel in July 2020 to the home of the Spanish Couturier, to the village of Guetaria, where Balenciaga was born and which is now home to the Balenciaga Foundation.

Discover Bvlgari’s Initiative That Sustainably Sources Flowers For Fragrance

The Bvlgari Flower Gems of India initiative is devoted to innovative and sustainable flower farming

Luxury Maison Bvlgari has collaborated with perfume designer Firmenich and its local partner Jasmine Concrete to create a new sustainable flower farming project in India. Flower Gems of India is a project in partnership and will work to ensure sustainable flower farming for the use in fragrance.

To be developed over three years, a pilot project will create a new jasmine farming model for 100 family-owned farms in two regions of the Indian floricultural area of Tamil Nadu.

The initiative offers farmers an alternative approach to jasmine production which is better for the environment and will ensure the growth of the industry for future generations, as well as improving the quality of the flowers.

The quality of the flowers is expected to improve thanks to a clean and short supply chain, richer organic cultivation, contamination-free free farmlands and extra care to the flowers themselves.

The project is also committed to improving the lives and social and economic well being of the families and those working on the farm.

Jean Christophe Babin, Bvlgari CEO explains: “Bvlgari’s quest for the most beautiful and flawless gems of nature led us to Firmenich and its partner Jasmine Concrete, which produces the world’s highest quality jasmine. It became important to us to contribute to support the communities that enable us to create our masterpiece fragrances, and that we establish a sustainable approach to preserve and support the local economy. Like our jewels, our fragrances are crafted from nature’s finest gems and it is our passion to research, source, and wherever possible, support the production of these extraordinary ingredients.”

Bvlgari is working with the local community to ensure a sustainable future for the coming generations as well as sustain the use of traditional crafts. The house has always been eager to support underprivileged communities and promote the notion of sustainable living and sustainable sourcing and creating of all of its products.

Dominique Roques, Vice President, Naturals Partnerships and Communication, Firmenich speaks of the project: “Over the last decade, Firmenich has built the industry’s leading natural sourcing program to develop sustainable economies, preserve biodiversity and support regenerative agriculture. Our NaturalsTogetherTM partners like Jasmine Concrete create real change in their communities by implementing advanced flower cultivation, treating issues such as erosion, nutrient loss, irrigation and composting. We are very proud to be a part of this program.”

The programme began last year and will run initially as a three-year pilot project. The flowers harvested through the model will be used as ingredients within Bvlgari’s fragrance offering.

Discover Paris Fashion Week Men’s Fall/Winter 2020 Shows

As the fashion crowd moves to Paris to see that latest fall/winter 2020 men’s shows, we discover the latest looks and trends that will be shaping up the men’s industry later this year.

Dior Men

For his fall/winter 2020 collection Dior Men’s Artistic Director Kim Jones was inspired by his friend and iconic stylist of the punk era Judy Blame. Jones drew on the brand’s archive to create a collection that was inspired by the past but looked to the future. There was a clear influence from the punk era and looks featured a deconstructed look and a nod to the designer’s love of architecture. But the beauty of this collection was in the details. We saw Moiré effects of silk, embroideries, arabesque motifs and paisley patterns. Opera gloves completed each look and buttons were covered in fabric. Shades of grey, blue, white and monochrome tones made up the colour palette, while pleats, volume and draping created an elegant finishing touch.

Louis Vuitton

Virgil Abloh’s love of streetwear has been widely expressed in previous seasons, but as the concept of streetwear evolves, so does the Artistic Director’s designs. For the fall/winter 2020 collection Abloh played with the classic suit. Re-defining traditional codes and styles and adding a unique edge to a tapered silhouette. The theme for the collection “Heaven on Earth” saw pints of blue skies and symbols of craft and creativity. An earthy colour palette was broken up by flashes of bold and neon hues such as pink blue and orange. This was perhaps the most elegant menswear collection we have seen from the brand in the past few seasons and it perhaps marks a new chapter of Abloh’s designs.

Valentino

At Valentino tailoring got a new look with the fall/winter 2020 collection designed Pierpaolo Picciolo. The elegant collection was inspired by today’s interpretation of romance and what the modern man needs today. Picciolo combines classics tailoring with sports influences and designs that allow expression and a new meaning to the “uniform” of the traditional suit. The colour palette features a harmonious collection of white, ivory, burgundy, lead, blue and black. This collection allows men to break the codes of tailoring and express themselves in a modern way.

Milan Fashion Week Men’s: Ermenegildo Zegna Couture XXX Fall/Winter 2020

Alessandro Sartori presented his latest offering for Ermenegildo Zegna Couture XXX in Milan last night.

Alessandro Sartori has previously explained how as much as fifty per cent of the materials used at Ermenegildo Zegna become waste – something that has been hugely disturbing for him as a man who is deeply concerned with sustainability and trying produce clothing in ways that are not contributing to the damage our planet is enduring.

So the Fall 2020 collection which was presented in Milan last night, was Sartori’s way of sharing his desire to combat this with the world. The show space itself was decorated with hundreds of ribbons of material hanging from the ceiling. These ribbons (all 37km of them) were made of surplus fabric from the last six of Sartori’s collections. The installation was entitled “Art for Earth” and highlighted the immense amount of waste that could potentially be recycled during the design process.

Zegna’s #UsetheExisting hashtag highlights the vow to recycle and reuse material from previous collections. The Fall 2020 Couture collection itself was said to be made of around fifty per cent recycled fabric. Looks incorporated Sartori’s love for combining classic tailoring with sportswear – a niche that he has successfully carved out in recent years. Fabrics were experimental as was the choice of colour palette which featured warm and rich autumnal tones.

Sartori highlighted that the world is truly done with classic streetwear. Men today are looking for a more convenient wardrobe that is uniform, so Sartori’s combination of streetwear, sportswear and tailing offers this way of dressing for the modern man. There was layering and interesting use of fastenings. Fits were slim and structured and jackets were designed to be worn in a number of ways. We saw patchwork and moiré patterns disrupting the clean simple mono-coloured looks, and hints of white created an interesting highlight.

Despite the modern mood, there was a distinct feeling of the past with many designs adopting a retro feel. Perhaps a nod to the brand’s history.

Highlights of 2019 in the UAE

As another year comes to a close we look back at some of the most memorable moments that have taken place in the UAE over the past twelve months.

First Emirati astronaut in space

In September, UAE born Hazzaa Ali Al Mansouri became the first Emirati astronaut to go into space. Al Mansouri was chosen as part of the UAE Astronaut Programme by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre. He joined Russian commander Oleg Skripochka and Nasa astronaut Jessica Meir on an eight-day visit to the International Space Station during which a number of scientific experiments were conducted. Al Mansouri was seen posting many images from both inside the space station and of the UAE from space during and after his time on the visit and he even hosted a traditional Emirati night onboard. The astronaut conducted live sessions called space-to-earth calls via a live radio.

Expo 2020 One Year to Go

On October 20th the UAE celebrated the one-year countdown to the long-awaited Expo 2020 event. 365 days ahead of the opening of the international fair Expo put on a huge celebration that even saw pop superstar Mariah Carey perform and a spectacular fireworks display. But it wasn’t all about A-list superstars. The event, which was held in Burj Park also gave a preview of what we can expect from Expo 2020 when it opens next year. Pinned as the ‘World’s Greatest Show’ Expo 2020 will see over 190 countries showcase the latest in technology and innovation. It’s the first time the Expo has been held in the Middle East and will also mark one of the biggest global events ever held in the region.

Abu Dhabi Climate Meeting

In July the Abu Dhabi Climate meeting called upon 1,000 delegates, energy experts, business leaders and UN members from around the world to come together and discuss the issue of climate change. The meeting aimed to highlight the critical dangers posed by the threat of global warming. During the event, experts warned that within a decade the world faces an increase of more than 1.5 degrees centigrade if it fails to act now. Discussions took place on the possibilities and what can be done going forward to try and reduce this global problem. The event heard calls for more penalties on pollution and discussions of how it is crucial to encourage youth leaders to promote the dangers of climate change.

The Pope visits Abu Dhabi

In February the UAE welcomed Pope Francis this in a visit that was the first time in history that a pope has ever visited the country. The landmark 3-day visit saw The Pope meet with UAE government officials including Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, and Ruler of the Emirate of Dubai. The visit was initiated by the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince on a recent trip to The Vatican.

Pope Francis was welcomed with a ceremony at the main entrance of the Presidential Palace, followed by an official visit to the Crown Prince at the Palace. He also visited the Grand Mosque and attended a private meeting with members of the Muslim Council of Elders. The International Interfaith Meeting, the primary cause for the Pope’s visit to the UAE, then took place at the Founder’s Memorial. This was the largest gathering of religious leaders to happen in the Arab world.

The Papal mass was the most eagerly awaited event of the three-day visit as it was the one occasion that would allow members of the public to participate in the trip. The mass, which mirrored those that are usually held in Vatican City by Pope Francis, was attended by around 180,000 members of the public.

Hanan Al Mahmoud CEO of JRCC Explains Why Sharjah’s E88 Market is Helping to Build a Community

‘E88 Market’ at the Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre (JRCC) in Sharjah is a family destination that encourages children and young adults to take part in engaging activities and spend time with their families. The event that will run until January 4th, previously attracted 10,000 visitors in its first edition last year.

As well as being a family destination E88 Market is a platform for entrepreneurs and businessmen and women to showcase their products and network with other participating businesses and potential clients.

Art performances and Culinary workshops for kids

Here we talk exclusively with Hanan Al Mahmoud, CEO of JRCC who talks through the vision of this platform and the social impact it has on the community.

What are the key features of the second edition of the ‘E88 Market’ Food and Shopping Festival?

This year, the festival will be bigger in size and duration. It will run for three weeks from December 15 – January 4 during the winter break to allow families across the UAE a chance to enjoy a jam-packed programme featuring outdoor food, fun activities and shopping.

Another key feature of the ‘E88 Market’ – which is also a prime reason in creating this event – is to provide businesses in the leisure and lifestyle, art and craft, F&B and entertainment segments gain exposure to thousands of visitors from all age groups and nationalities.

Art performances and Culinary workshops for kids

How do recreational activities contribute to the social and economic development of Sharjah?

Sharjah’s recent win of the UNICEF Child-Friendly City Initiative is a significant achievement in the city’s ongoing efforts to foster a nurturing environment for its upcoming generations. Under the directive of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and under the patronage of his wife, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, the emirate has become a role model in the region and the world for the young generation to grow, learn and unleash their creativity in a safe and lively environment.

Recreational events like ‘E88 Market’ do have a social and educational impact as they are designed to stimulate children’s imagination, assist in their mental and physical development, and instil a culture of teamwork and participation based on the values of love, cooperation and respect for others.

Art performances and Culinary workshops for kids

What main factors guided the preparation of the second edition of E88?

After the first edition of ‘E88 Market’ in November last year, we received valuable feedback from visitors, and have incorporated many of their suggestions within this edition, including a change of the festival’s date to align with the winter break, as well as extending the duration.

The majority of families told us that their children took part in activities they had never experienced before. Parents were also happy to discover hidden, inherent talents of their children. The children, meanwhile, voiced their happiness on spending quality time with their parents and connecting with them, and showcasing their talents.

In this edition, we have therefore increased activities that call for participation of both parents and children, to maximise the time they spend together.

What is the social impact of ‘E88 Market’ Food and Shopping Festival?

Many research studies point to the negative effects of the use of smart devices on family relationships as children report feeling ‘unimportant’ when parents are hooked to digital devices.

‘E88 Market’ is our contribution to help this disconnect. The event’s interactive edutainment activities are designed to nurture stronger communication and emotional bonding between parents and children. It will also create lasting, happy memories, and boost character building through parents’ involvement in the lives of their children.

‘E88 Market’ Food and Shopping Festival runs from December 15 to January 4 from 4pm to 11pm at Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre (JRCC).

Max Mara Takes Sustainability to the Next Level With its CameLuxe Project

In today’s environment being sustainable is on top of every major fashion brand’s agenda. The amount of waste in the fashion industry has become out of control and fashion houses are looking for new ways to reduce the amount of leftover material when producing products – one of the biggest causes of waste within the design process.

At Max Mara the design team has taken an “upcycling” approach with its new CameLuxe material. CameLuxe is a unique material that is made from re-vamping waste to create an insulating pad which can be used as a lining in the brand’s designs.

The whole process involved three steps. Firstly, recovered and discarded materials are gathered from the manufacturers in Italy. These unwanted materials are then transformed through a mechanic process into very fine fibres. The fibres are then blended with recycled polyester, creating a high-performing insulating mix. The process of manufacture in less impactful in terms of energy consumption, waste production, water usage and CO2 emission.

Cameluxe has been used in 11 styles of the Max Mara The Cube spring/summer 2020 collection. The Cube collection concentrates on the research of innovation, creating modern designs that are made in a way that is much less harmful to the environment. The collection is designed for today’s modern woman and includes features such as being transformable, reversible and able to be worn in a number of ways.

The Cameluxe project is carried out under the Global Recycling Standard, a certification promoted by Textile Exchange, an established non-profit institution, that for over 15 years has been supporting responsible and sustainable product development in the textile industry, and ICEA, a national non-profit institution that certifies that organisations operate in line with sustainable standards for the environment and for people.

Emirati Architect Abdalla Almulla Partners With Audi to Create the Innovation Hub of the Future

At this year’s Dubai Design Week Audi showcased its first full-electric car through the Audi Innovation Hub.

The hub was also the destination for the announcement of the women of the Audi Innovation Award as well as the meeting point for talks and discussions on the subject of the future in automotive design. Internationally awarded Emirati architect, Abdalla Almulla was invited to create the design for the hub. Almulla has worked on architectural projects both in the region and in the United States. His design aesthetic is to delve into the unknown, creating new ideas and design techniques.

For the project with Audi Almulla looked to the car brand itself for inspiration. Interpreting the design of Audi’s first electric car the e-tron, Almulla created a futuristic concept with clean lines and innovative shapes. Here we find out more about this project and discuss design and architecture in the region.

Abdalla Almulla

What does it mean to you to be chosen to work on this project for Audi?

It is definitely a great pleasure but also a critical point of growth and an encouragement to deliver always with the highest quality.

What can you tell us about the inspiration for your design?

The concept at the root of the Audi Innovation Hub project is Audi’s first full-electric car the all-new Audi e-tron. We were inspired by the Audi e-tron’s power, comfort and silent interior. Within the power of the car, there is a tranquillity promising the user a calm driving journey. Envisioning a structure that would reflect the design elements of the Audi e-tron, we focused on two guiding forces when designing the Hub: the horizontal lines sweeping along the car’s outer edge, and the power of silence while driving.

With these forces combined, the result is a space layout created by intersecting the circles of the Audi logo and linking this with a sweeping sculpted steel structure that connects two main areas with slim horizontal lines. The arrangement of lines and curves creates a transcending fluid pattern of robust steel members that symbolize Audi’s power and performance in motion. The curved form of the Audi Innovation Hub also features a gradient mesh creating shade and representing the tranquil environment inside the e-tron as the visitor moves within the structure.

How do you think Dubai Design Week is a good platform for the Middle East?

Dubai Design Week is great because it’s a week-long event that hosts all the regional and global designers, which becomes a great opportunity to all designers wanting to showcase their designs and network.

Audi Innovation Hub Design

How would you describe your personal design style?

The creative practice is driven by the creative energy, which is constantly in flux; going into the unknown, creating new ideas and developing them as the design advances. The methodologies are perceived as a sequence of theoretical and visual design explorations within a focused subject by using patterns and geometry as regulators in setting the design guidelines.

I simultaneously study the subject’s attributes to develop them through a preliminary study of concepts, prototyping and digital technology. We use the method of prototyping to learn and repeat, in doing so, a creative value is added to the creative practice to constantly evolve, providing the customers with unique designs.

When do you get most inspired?

When design is required to solve a problem. This is where I think the beauty of design lays.

What is your favourite piece of architecture?

I have many, but one of my favourites would be Guggenheim Museum by Frank Lloyd Wright in New York.

Abdalla Almulla and Audi e-tron

What are your thoughts on the architecture in the UAE?

The UAE has some of the most iconic buildings worldwide, the old architecture is not as rich as other regions in the world for various factors, but the newly built architecture is working as a tool to showcase to the world our capabilities on different scales (social, economic, etc).

What’s the biggest challenge you face in what you do?

To continue to be inspired on a daily basis.

What is one thing you would still like to do that you haven’t had the chance to do yet?

I would like to create more social projects that focus on urban planning and affecting people on a broader scale.

Audi Innovation Hub Design

Are there any trends you are particularly interested in at the moment?

I’m not sure if it’s a trend, but definitely interested in Artificial Intelligence and looking forward to seeing how it would enhance our design capabilities.

What is the one thing you love most about the UAE?

The diversity, it helps me believe we have a way of coexisting and contribute to each other.
