Here are all the basics you need, for a solid day-to-day skincare routine.

Know your skin type

The first rule of skincare is to know your skin type. Determine whether you have oily (spot-prone) skin, dry skin, combination (a mixture of both), or sensitive skin (this last type tends to easily react to products). This will guide you in choosing the right products for your specific needs.

The power of three: Cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise

Cleanse your face twice a day using a gentle facial cleanser. This helps remove dirt, oil, and impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils. ExfoliatIng you will want to do less frequently (think  2-3 times a week) to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. This can help prevent ingrown hairs and improve the texture of your skin. Finally, invest in a moisturiser. Even if you have oily skin, using a lightweight moisturiser can help maintain the skin’s hydration balance and prevent dryness.

Prevention is the best policy

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every morning, even on cloudy days. This helps prevent sun damage, premature ageing and reduces the risk of skin cancer.

Shaving technique and aftercare

If you shave, use a sharp, clean razor and shaving cream or gel to minimize irritation. Shave in the direction of hair growth to prevent ingrown hairs. In terms of shaving aftercare, use an alcohol-free, soothing after-shave balm to calm the skin after shaving.

Healthy lifestyle

Everything you put in your body can affect your skin. Be sure to stay hydrated and consume a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, as nutrient-rich foods support overall skin health. Alongside a healthy diet, make sure you get enough sleep. As a rule of thumb, aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to allow your skin to repair and regenerate. Similarly, High-stress levels can impact your skin’s health. Practice stress-reduction techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing.

Avoid harsh products

Avoid harsh, alcohol-based skincare products as they can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause irritation.

Stay hygienic

Keep your hands clean and avoid touching your face frequently to prevent the spread of bacteria.

Focus on the eyes

Around the eye, skin can be particularly sensitive and prone to damage. f you have concerns about under-eye puffiness or dark circles, consider using a lightweight eye cream designed to target these issues.

Keep at it

It can take time to see results when you change up your skin routine (as it can take 4-6 weeks for skin cell renewal). Stick to your skincare routine consistently to see improvements over weeks and months. If you have any particular concerns, seek the advice of a skincare professional.
