Greek Goddesses at Valentino Haute Couture Spring 2017

Dreams and mythical stories were the inspiration for the Valentino Haute Couture Spring 2017 collection. Pierpaolo Piccioli said: “Dreams make us human; they go down to who each of us are, in ourselves, because they were the beginning of naming human feelings.”

The essence was dream-like, beauty, femininity with classical aesthetics of ancient Greek architecture and mythology. There were young goddesses wearing flowing pleated gowns, statuesque floor-length tabards, long chiffon scarves, cloaks, and Greek sandals.

Dresses were made for Roman or Greek goddesses, in flowy-but-shapeless silhouettes and muted colours. The details were still ornate, thanks to knife-pleating, tight braiding, and floral appliqués, but beyond a flash of red, or pink, or cascading ruffles, the overall effect was elegant and understated.

Silhouettes were covered with alluring see-through pieces. Wide trousers were slipped under some of the looks. The micro fan-pleating, intricately pieced together from segments of silk and jersey.
