A&E Interviews Alice Temperley

Alice Temperley MBE has become an iconic British designer who is known for her feminine silhouettes, stand out prints and sparkling garments.

Born in 1975, she was one of four children brought up on her parents’ idyllic Somerset farm. After graduating from London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, she launched the label in 2000 and made her runway debut in London’s Twentieth Century Theatre in 2003. The core business focuses on women’s ready-to-wear collections, which have evolved to offer a comprehensive range of daywear, cocktail and eveningwear. She also oversees a very successful Temperley Bridal line that was launched in 2006 with two collections a year. If you’re on a hunt for timeless shapes that are inspired by the romance and decadence of a bygone era, she’s your girl.

One of her biggest moments came in 2011 when she received Honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire accolade for services in the fashion industry presented by Queen Elizabeth II. The Duchess of Cambridge has been spotted in many of her creations along with Scarlett Johansson, Kiera Knightley and Demi Moore.

While in Middle East celebrating her freshly renovated store in the Dubai Mall, one of five in the world, and showcasing her Summer collection, we caught up with the designer to find out more about the latest line, her take on the fashion industry today and plans for the region.

How did you first become interested in fashion?

I was making and selling things from the age of 11, always making fabrics from bits and pieces. I realized that making clothes can make you feel in a different way, completely change your emotion and confidence. Growing up in the countryside I loved making stuff to transport fairytale feeling. Then started selling stuff at college to pay my way through college, and then I ended up with a business and I’m here thinking ‘what have I done’!

What has been the most significant breakthrough moment in your career?

Still waiting for it a little bit. Getting an MBE from the Queen was cool.

How has the industry changed since you first started?

There is a lot more products, designers, a lot more seasons, it’s very fast and now there’s a whole attitude towards being not for fast fashion and being eco-focused. There’s a change in the industry because it got too fast – too many shows, too many seasons, too many people flying all over the place and sort of confusion. So now all brands have gotten really focused on what their brand identity is and stay very true to that.

What part of the creative process do you enjoy the most?

Concept of coming together with an idea and the end. When you’re tying it all together and you’re doing the shows and shoots.

What challenges do you face?

Just the speed of it and not being able to take a month off if I feel like it. In fashion you just keep going.

Tell us about the summer collection?

I was in my office and I actually just wanted to be in Cannes and on a boat and then at Hotel du Cap. So you set the scene and then pull all the colours, tile details, garden details and the glittery details on the water at night, and then you create your stories out of that and put the collection together. It’s labor intensive as all the fabrics produced are designed in-house, as well as all of the embroidery and prints so it’s a lot of work, and I don’t think anybody has any idea how much work.

How do you want a woman to feel wearing your clothes?

Celebratory, like you’re in a fairytale. My hope is romantic, so I like it to feel like it’s transporting you somewhere that is not the normal, somewhere where it feels passionate and feminine.

What do you think of the fashion scene in the Middle East?

I love the fact people dress up breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Your summer collection is doing really well in the region, what do you think is so appealing?

The weight of it, the colour of it, the lightness and the ease of it. There’s a lot of chicness to our summer collection. You know it will stand the test of time.

If you could pick one piece in your collection for us to wear in the Dubai heat, what would it be?

The shirt dress, that you can open up and close. It’s super soft and doesn’t cling to the body.

What is your experience with the way social media and digital is shaping the industry?

Now you can shop on social media, it’s great. Also creating films and moving content, it’s about bringing the brand to life because this brand it’s here – but who is wearing it? Where is she wearing it? How is she wearing it? That content is so important to engage a customer and to sell a dress. You can’t rely on clothes hanging in store because it’s soulless, you have to create experiences and the easiest way to do this is through social media, moving images and film so we will be doing a lot more of that. People think Temperley do eveningwear but we do a lot of daywear too so you need to show people that, so it’s really important to put that across social media.

What’s your relationship with clothes?

I have so many clothes, it’s not funny, I literally have a problem with clothes because I don’t throw anything away. My thought is to try and get all my clothes in one place and then I can dress like a princess everyday.

Which designers do you admire?

I love Alaïa and obviously McQueen. I love the 40’s Dior jackets that I nipped in at the waist and I love Victoriana blouses – but I’m not a one brand person.

Name three things that get you up in the morning?

My son, sunshine and always having something to look forward to, like a plan. You always have to something to look forward to.

What’s the one item of clothing that is always in your wardrobe?

White shirts.

Anything that irritates you?

Elasticated waistbands, sound of people eating and brash trends.

Where are you traveling to this summer?

Going to Cannes, Ibiza, spending some time in Somerset and maybe a little bit of time in LA.

What do you pack in your suitcase?

A lot of the Summer collection.

What are your future plans for the region?

We want to support our customers here, give more beautiful dresses and do a few more events. We have a shop here and Qatar and looking to grow more in the Middle East.

Up Your Ramadan Style Game Like Queen Rania

It’s hard not to be continuously impressed by Queen Rania’s style, especially during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

In Basman Palace located in Amman, Jordan, the royal hosted an Iftar dressed in a stylishly modest shirt dress by a New York label Hellessy. She stayed on trend by choosing an asymmetric line of the skirt and adding a black belt for a touch of femininity.

According to the monarch’s social media, the event was in in aid of ‘a group of ambitious young Jordanians who have contributed to serving their communities, each in his or her own way.’ She kept it classically chic with black Ellipsis pointed-toe pumps from Gianvito Rossi, a Louis Vuitton black top handle bag and drop earrings.

Feeling inspired? You can shop the dress now on Net-A-Porter.

What To Expect From Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s Beauty Website

A few weeks ago Rosie Huntington-Whiteley teased a new project, but while we all believed it to be a makeup range, turns out it’s actually an online encyclopaedia of everything beauty.

The model finally unveiled a digital platform dedicated to makeup and wellness that sees interviews with experts and celebrity contributors like Poppy Delevingne. Taking on a role as editor, the 31-year-old has created a glossy e-notebook sharing beauty advice and passing on the knowledge from the guru’s of the industry. On the homepage, she writes:

“As a girl, I was fascinated watching my mother apply makeup before a night out. Seeing her transform was special to me—I found it so feminine, so personal. Before long, I was saving up my pocket money to buy a sticky roll-on lip gloss or glittery blue eyeshadow at the local pharmacy. I know this feeling is nearly universal. This is my evolution of it.”

Click on the website and you are immediately see makeup artists showcasing how to achieve one of Rosie’s famous looks, in the drop down menu browse her famous friends bathrooms, see what goes on backstage, read up on the latest trends and shop her hero products.

“Timeless makeup tricks that instantly make you feel like your best self. Products and regimens that can get you glowing, and stat. Ways to turn a bad hair day into a great ponytail day, or what to do when dinner with friends calls for the perfect glam look. And, of course, a glimpse into some of my friends’ makeup bags.”

Cruise 2019: Gucci

“The inspiration is an ossuary, the crypts of the cardinals, of the monks in the 15th century, and the precious decorations. This idea is that everything that is linked to the afterlife is accompanied by something of maximum beauty,” said Alessandro Michele in a statement after the show at the Promenade Des Alyscamps in Arles, France.

It might sound ominous at first but the collection, told through 114 looks featuring burst of colours, clashes of print, intricate details like embroidered stars, rich fabrics like velvet capes, shell style necklace with a woman dressed in a traditional Japanese dress and transparent Ophidia bags, felt like a celebration of the past centuries. Michele transported the audience through time starting in 15th Century and ending up somewhere in the 80’s. He paid tribute to the dramatic setting by including past names of the city on some of pieces, while other carried sentences from artists such as Dante Alighieri who was inspired by Alyscamps.

“Alyscamps is a Roman cemetery, but it’s also not a cemetery, it was a promenade, it became a walk in the 1700s; it is hybridized, it does not look like a cemetery because it is and it isn’t. I like things that seem like something but are not,” the designer added.

The gothic grunge could be felt in a boxy leather jacket styled with high-waist jeans and a pop of pink sock worn with pointed-toe pumps, as well as fringed dresses, sequins, chains and chokers. Logo’s also dominated with the Italian house paying tribute to Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles by printing the hotel’s name on sweatshirts.

Michele continues to deliver a strong brand DNA but this time, even with styling that your eyes take a while to adjust to, it felt the most wearable with a variety of day-to-night statement pieces that deliver a touch of modern gothic glamour to your wardrobe.

Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Honeymooning in Canada?

There has been much speculation over where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will honeymoon, and after various reports, looks like Canada is the lucky winner.

Some believed that the newlyweds might be heading to Botswana where Harry took Meghan to celebrate her 36th birthday, while others thought that Australia or Hawaii will get the royal approval.

Instead, the pair are said to be jetting off to Alberta where, according to TMZ, they plan to stay at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge’s Outlook Cabin. Located in the middle of a national park, the getaway has previously been visited by Queen Elizabeth II and her mother as well as a list of celebrities including Marilyne Monroe. The 6,000 square foot cabin should have everything they need, though we expect there will be a list of extra’s to guarantee a blissful stay.

From what we’ve seen, it looks like a dream honeymoon but whether this is another ‘leak’ to keep the press from knowing the actual destination is yet to be confirmed.

Yellow Gold Returns This Summer

For the last few seasons, rose gold ruled supreme for it’s ability to compliment every skin tone, but yellow gold is making a comeback in a big way.

A timeless classic, there is something nostalgic yet very modern about yellow gold. It pops on the skin and enhances any outfit. To prevent it from looking dated, choose delicate pieces and try layering them to achieve the impact you want, rather than going for something bulky. Colourful gem stones is a nice way to show personality while geometric shapes bring modernity. But if you’re not ready to step away from white or rose gold, look to brands that offer you combination pieces that add a contemporary appeal.

Cruise 2019: Bottega Veneta

Bottega Veneta Cruise 2019 collection is split into three categories to deliver customers fresh designs in a new modern way.

To address the complexities of the modern pre-collection, creative director Tomas Maier decided to design three distinct groups across both men’s and women’s lines. He explains:

“They function like mini collections. One delivers in November, one in December and one in January. Each one is about what my client might need or want at the time when pieces arrive in the store.”

The women’s collection leads on from the FW18 runway with the same rich intense palette in colours like deep orange, marigold yellow and Baccara rose. Maier plays with proportion and volumes in wintry pieces with the signature double cashmere and double wool turning sporty.

Elsewhere, full, round skirts are topped with chunky knits and cropped jackets, balanced by slim high-heeled boots to the knee. For the season’s parties, Maier offers a voluminous dress and skirt in pleated taffeta. The second group takes a dramatic turn, trading fall’s jewel tones for icy, washed pastels:

“I wanted to offer the lightest colors for the darkest days of the year,” says Maier. “I think they’re very mood-lifting.”

The last group gives us a little glimpse into what to expect from the Spring collection. Each motif is created from tiny dots, giving the illusion of a houndstooth or wallpaper print from afar. As for accessories, Maier introduced a way to layer your favourite pieces. There are small leather goods in Intrecciato Checker—round coin purses, rectangular mini wallets—designed to slide onto slim belts or the strap of a handbag to customize to your preference.

Gents can expect a similar feel with rich colours that were evident in FW18 range with elevated autumnal plaid prints. Our top pick are the winter whites and desert hues punctuated by pops of bubblegum pink and mint green. The menswear entrée to spring also revolves around the illusory dot, which Maier uses to create discreet pointillist versions of classic menswear checks: Prince of Wales, windowpane and plaid. The dots are mixed with butterfly-print shirts and mélange knits for a look that’s a complex but cohesive collage of pattern and texture. The whimsical element is balanced by the easy, essential nature of the silhouettes.

Maier mission is for you to take a break from your go-to basics and enjoy wearing something unique and elegant.

On Our Radar: Herfah by Naeema

You know you’re doing something right when a major international e-tailer adds you to their brand list, and that’s exactly what happened with Herfah by Naeema.

The Contemporary Saudi label is on a mission to support artisans and celebrate culture. As a result, it attracted the buyers at Moda Operandi who included it in their recent Best of the Middle East trunk show.

Founded by Naeema AlShuhail in 2015, all the pieces are produced in Lebanon, but in aim to preserve traditional craft, a lot of the embroidery is done by 40 local women artisans in Saudi Arabi, with the brand always encouraging more to join the creative movement. Sustainability has become a buzz word in fashion and is one of the core values for Herfah by Naeema that apply various efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. On social media, the brand said:

‘Sustainability is at the heart of what and why we create. We value and respect the people making our designs and are constantly working to improve on our impact. When we say our collection is #madewithlove it’s not just a marketing term, it’s a philosophy we practice; people and the environment are considered at every single step of the process.’

For their Ramadan collection, which is available now, the organza jacket with handmade saddu belt has proven to be an instant hit among loyal followers of the label, while other key pieces offer fluid shapes that elegantly move with every step.

Keep an eye on their Instagram account for the newest additions to their collections.

Luxury fragrance house Diptyque has revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chose their scents and candles for their wedding day.

The couple handpicked a selection of fresh and floral candles and room sprays that scented the areas where newly titled Duke and Duchess of Sussex were getting ready for their special occasion. The brand’s fresh scents were also used in the surroundings of St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

The brand is known for their ability to uniquely blend aromas that have earned them a cult status among fragrance lovers. We don’t know the exact scents that the couple chose, but we imagine they would’ve complimented the foxgloves, peonies, roses and birch, which were included in the floral arrangements by Philippa Craddock.

Fabienne Mauny, Global Managing Director of Diptyque told the Telegraph that they were extremely proud to be chosen ‘to scent such an important moment for Their Royal Highnesses’ and added:

“We were touched to have been part of such a significant day, made more special as one of our founders, Desmond Knox Leet, was British. We hope the fragrance contributed to such a memorable day.”

For the summer, why not try the brands latest addition Eau des Sens Hair Mist that leaves a light veil of citrus fragrance on your locks.

Boat Neckline Wedding Dresses Are Back

You can thank Meghan Markle and Clare Waight Keller for bringing back the boat neckline wedding dresses.

The new Duchess of Sussex chose this classically elegant silhouette and Waight Keller used her design mastery to create a show-stopping Givenchy gown that was admired by over a billion people around the world on Saturday.

Why does this shape work so well? It is timeless and seriously chic. The neckline adds just the right amount of femininity without edging on boring. Also, some believe the neckline is one of women’s best features, so do like Markle and wear your hair in a low bun to showcase the clean lines of the cut.

As with the previous Royal Wedding between Kate Middleton and Prince William in 2011, this style has been making it’s way round the trend pages with many soon-to-be brides seeking to recreate that minimalist princess moment on their special day. We’ve also done our research to bring together some of the best versions of Meghan Markle’s custom-made gown in the gallery above.
