Loafers Get A Fashion Makeover This Season

Loafers are a classic shoe that can find a home in anyone’s wardrobe, and this season they have been elevated to a new fashion level.

Still timeless but with an added oomph, the daily go-to’s have been revamped into a true statement with extra hardware like graphic buckles as well as bulkier heels. The style is sensible yet effective, while the masculine shape manages to transform a feminine outfit into something edgier.

Look for loafers with a collapsible back for versatility and comfort like a pair of Chloé’s Quincey that come in this season must-have shade of white, or the Isabel Marant’s high-shine Fezzy in silver. Smarten up the denim with Nicholas Kirkwood’s Casati  loafers that are inspired by Italian heiress and fashion icon Luisa Casati and feature lustrous faux pearls along the sculptural gold heel, while Tod’s i.e THE loafer brand added a few pastel shades and a denim version modelled by Kendall Jenner.

Thanks To Dior, You Can Now Visit Marie-Antoinette’s Versailles Retreat

Thanks to Dior,  Marie-Antoinette’s Versailles rustic retreat will be open to the public from May 12.

The house of Dior was the sponsor of the three-year restoration of the Maison de la Reine (Queen’s House in English) at the Château de Versaille. The aim was to capture the original atmosphere of the site, and now you can step back in time to a place where Marie-Antoinette sought solitude away from her Royal duties.

The three-storey château was a wedding gift to the Queen from Louis XVI and was built between 1783 and 1787. It was one of the 11 building, of which five were exclusively used by Marie-Antoinette and her guests. The renovation saw the reproduction of original features such wooden staircase and the vegetable gardens with some Royal family furnishings, including a bed from Empress Marie-Louise, the grand-niece of Marie-Antoinette.

Are Ralph & Russo Making Meghan Markle’s Wedding Dress?

According to a UK tabloid newspaper, Ralph & Russo have been chosen as the designers for Meghan Markle’s wedding dress.

Daily Mail’s article claimed that the London-based couture house will be making the bridal gown, a ‘heavily beaded’ dress for post-ceremony reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth in St George’s Hall at Windsor Castle, and then another dress for the evening celebrations.

There has been no comment from Ralph & Russo to confirm this, but Markle did choose their creation for her official engagement portrait with Prince Harry. The design duo specialise in red-carpet worthy gowns and have already created several pieces for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

Many believe they are worthy of creating what will be one of the most talked about wedding dresses, and we look forward to the opening their Dubai boutique at the end of this month.

10 Questions with… Celebrity Hairstylist Mario Charalambous

The  famed hair salon Richard Ward has an impressive client list of Britain’s best-known celebrities and members of the royal family. Key to the salon’s success is Mario Charalambous, the technical director who will be bringing his expert cutting and colouring techniques to the award-winning Pastels Salon’s Ritz Carlton Dubai on May 12  and May 15. Here, we chat to him about the best ways to look after your hair in the heat.

What hair trends do you see emerging this season?

Long hair is still very soft and dishevelled which I love and short is just as subjective and playful.

What is the best way to protect our hair form sun damage?

The key elements is the word “SUN” so be sure to safeguard your hair with a UV protecting shampoo and conditioner and use a UV sun screen when wet or dry. During the summer your hair is exposed more than usual to the UV light, salt and chlorinated water and mechanical aggressions. Kerastase has a fantastic range called SOLEIL to provide sublime hair protection under the sun. It’s important to have that sun screen for your hair too.

Humidity is not our friend. What products should we use?

KERASTASE DISCIPLINE: It is a  haircare range designed specifically for frizzy and unruly curly hair. If you are looking for a hair treatment, then visit Pastels Salon and have the very best in keratin treatments from KeraStraight. Thanks to this miracle treatment, it can be as humid as possible and your hair will always look perfect.

Take us through an easy up-do we can do at home?

Put your parting in and leave this side out.

Ponytail the rest then wrap the left out hair around the ponytail and secure with a few grips. This is perfect for a quick up-do after work.  Nothing is chicer than a ponytail, but the key is to wrap the hair round the band.

Just take a bit of hair once you have ponytailed it and spray it with hairspray until it is wet, then wrap it round the band and secure with a grip.

What is the secret to long healthy hair?

Unfortunately not what you want to hear but frequent haircuts, at least every 6-8 weeks, it keeps the split ends at bay.

What can we do to restore our hair back to health after overdoing it with straighteners and curlers?

Hydrate, Hydrate and more Hydration. But girls it’s so easy, just use a heat protecting balm before you blow dry, this will stop the damage from happening.

What is the biggest mistake people make when it comes to hair care?

Have it prescribed and don’t pick it off the shelf yourself. If it’s prescribed to you use it, then go back to your stylist and be reassessed. They’ll then give you something to maintain what the first prescription did.

Mario Charalambous L’Oreal campaign with Poppy Delevingne.

If you were to style Meghan Markle for her big day, what would you do?

She’s beautiful so you’d have to be pretty rubbish to mess it up, but practice, practice, practice.

Who is your hair muse?

It would have to be Vidal Sassoon for his architectural approach and his shear tenacity.

If you could give us one piece of advice, what would it be?

Listen to the experts and always take any ideas with you to show them. Always let them know your dislikes. If we steer away from these then everyone’s happy.

What A&E Editors Wear in The Heat

Summer fashion just got a whole lot easier with our editors guide to beating the heat. Whether it’s dresses or jumpsuits, bold accessories or understated classics, we have four unique formulas for heat and humidity proof dressing to keep you stylish and comfortable.

Lindsay Judge, Deputy Editor A&E Magazine

Valentino jacket and sandals, Tory Burch dress, Cult Gaia bag, Chloe wedges, Miu Miu sunglasses.

I am a maxi dress girl all summer long. I usually try to opt for a light floaty fabrics like this gorgeous red chiffon maxi by Tory Burch. To accessorize, I would pair it with open toe sandals like these Rockstud’s by Valentino, Miu Miu sunglasses and and Instagam favourite Cult Gaia bag. For night time, I’d swap in a pair of comfy wedges like these Chloe’s and thrown on a Valentino leather jacket.

Charline Deek, Senior Editor of A&E Arabia

Michael Michael Kors Dress, Mayshad Paris bag, Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses, Oscar De La Renta Earrings, Christian Louboutin shoes.

The main struggle everyone faces when choosing their outfit in Dubai is how to beat the heat! For this kind of climate where the sun is more than shining and the humidity is at it’s highest level, I always choose a white comfortable dress. Colourful accessories are a must as not only do they help freshen up an outfit, but they’re a great way to express you style. The Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses and the Mayshad Paris bag are my favourites for this season as they are easy to mix and match with anything.

Diana Bell-Heather, Online Editor for aeworld.com

Madiyah Al Sharqi‎ jumpsuit at TheModist.com, Linda Farrow sunglasses, Lutz Morris belt bag, Rebecca de Ravenel earrings, Malone Souliers shoes.

This will be my third summer in Dubai and just like with the previous ones, it’s a shock to the system. I reshuffle my wardrobe and clear out anything that clings to the body in favour of breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. Dresses are the core of my wardrobe, but this season I want invest in a sugary pastel jumpsuit that can be worn with flats and heels. I have been living in backless mules as they are so easy to slip into and I am also expanding my horizons when it comes to accessories and have my eye on wooden jewellery by Rebecca de Ravenel.

Tiffany & Co. Celebrates The New Generation

Tiffany & Co are taking on a new direction with the introduction of Elle Fanning as the face of their 2018 brand campaign.

The Maison took over New York to celebrate their bold new step with yellow cabs and subway stations getting a Tiffany’ blue makeover as well as a star-studded party with the likes of Naomi Campbell, Michelle Williams and Kendall Jenner.

Recently appointed chief artistic officer Reed Krakoff wanted to capture the spirit of the buzzing city and appeal to a new generation. The campaign images show a smiling Fanning in one shot, while in another she is dressed in a hooded jumper with a mini crown decorating her messy hair.

The campaign video is a modern spin on Breakfast at Tiffany’s which was filmed outside the iconic 5th Avenue flagship store. Fanning is seen with a cup of coffee in hand as she daydreams about the jewellery world with plenty of dancing to ‘Moon River’, which also features her singing and A$AP Ferg’s rapping. The campaign marks the first time Tiffany & Co. has ever created a song, which is available for streaming exclusively on Spotify.

“We wanted to take a fresh approach to the campaign, juxtaposing something visually extraordinary with a song that is a nostalgic nod to the past combined with something wholly unexpected and of the moment,” said Reed Krakoff, chief artistic officer, Tiffany & Co.

Hunger Games director, Francis Lawrence, best known for creating some of pop culture’s most iconic music videos and films, directed the Believe in Dreams campaign film which you can watch in full below.

What A&E Editors Will Be Wearing This Ramadan

With Ramadan just a few days away, our editors share what they will be wearing this holy month.

Lindsay Judge, Deputy Editor

Rosie Assoulin dress, Saint Laurent bag, Alaia shoes, Katerina Makriyianni earrings.

My go-to outfit for Ramadan Iftars is a well-accessorized statement maxi dress. This yellow ruffle number by Rosie Assoulin is my current favourite and I’d pair it with metallic sandals by Alaia, statement earrings by Katerina Makriyianni. Hero piece? This bright purple velvet bag by Saint Laurent.

Charline Deek, Arabic Editor

Reem Acra dress, Emporio Armani bag, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, Dior sunglasses, Shourouk earrings.

A lot of events and Iftars are going on in Dubai during Ramadan, especially for us as working in the Media. That’s why we have to always look elegant and feel comfortable as well. Here I chose a green dress from the exclusive capsules lunched by NET-A-PORTER for Ramadan, with a flat sandal from Giuseppe Zanotti. To complete my look, I chose The Shourouk earrings to add some sparkle to my smart casual style.

Dana Mortada, Editor

Seren jumpsuit, Saint Laurent bag, Rosantica earrings, Gianvito Rossi shoes.

My favourite go-to for the perfect Ramadan style would have to be an understated piece, like a classic wide-legged silk satin jumpsuit. Why a jumpsuit? Because it is effortless and can be paired with almost everything you own without sacrificing your daily style. This floral patterned Seren ‘Kimi’ jumpsuit is inspired by the traditional kimono design and can be coordinated with a mini pouch, comfortable sandals and gold earrings at any charming Iftar dinner with family and friends.

Diana Bell-Heather, Online Editor

Zimmermann dress at ounass.com, Loewe bag, Malone Souliers shoe at bysymphony.com, By Far shoe at net-a-porter.com, Givenchy sunglasses, Valentino headband, Amrapali at modaoperandi.com

I love Ramadan in Dubai especially the sense of family and celebration during Iftar’s. It makes me want to reach for something bright and pretty like this Zimmermann flowing dress that can look just as good with heeled sandals as it does with flat mules. Something about this time of year awakens a magpie in me so I take a break from my minimalist jewellery in favour of statement earrings.

A&E Guide To A Healthy Ramadan

Reform Athletica Fitness Boutique

The act of fasting during Ramadan makes it hard to keep up with your fitness routine, but fear not as we have expert tips to help you stay healthy and happy in body and mind throughout the holy month.

The first few days of Ramadan are challenging as you adjust to a new routine, so avoid any exercise at the beginning until you body feels accustomed to the idea of fasting. Then, start with a light classes such as Yoga or Pilates, and then gradually increase your level.

One of our favourite spots in the city is Reform Athletica where after a 50-minute class focusing strength and conditioning exercises performed on the latest Lagree Megaformer machine – originating from Los Angeles, incorporating Pilates and gymnastics inspired movements – your body feels worked head to toe. Dina ElShurafa, Founder of Reform Athletica recommends to sticking to two workouts a week, keep Iftar meals light and hydrate well after breaking fast.

With long periods of fasting, it can be easy to make the wrong food choices when breaking fast but Banin Shahine, resident nutrition expert at Fitness First, believes in preparation before the start of Ramadan:

“I first prepare for the caffeine withdrawal. Two weeks before Ramadan begins, I start to prepare my body and delay my morning coffee to the afternoon which reduces the risk of headaches. Then it is all about how you manage your eating habits. If you eat and drink properly between Suhoor and Iftar, you will give your body what it needs in order to cope with fasting.”

“Carbohydrates does not just mean rice, bread and pasta, add high value carbs to your soups such as sweet potatoes, beets, squash and broccoli or add green leafy vegetables to your salad. With an unusual sleeping pattern, fish is the best source of protein as it is light, highly nutritional and full of good fats.”

Fasting helps renew your body and mind and create a deeper awareness of your soul. Dr. Sumaya, acclaimed Saudi Life Coach, believes, that inevitably, during fasting, you will begin to think differently – removing both physical and mental obstacles – it allows spiritual energy to flow freely, helping expand you spirit and balancing the thought train of ‘materialism’ and ‘spirituality’. Our tip? Find moments to stillness and solitude, whether at home or at the park or beach.

Why Fendi Timpieces Are Some Of The Most Innovative Watches In The World

Fun, futuristic, fashionable, fearless, functional and free. these are just some of the words to describe the Fendi timepieces family.

Renowned for its distinctive look, daring colour and material combinations, Fendi Timepieces celebrates the Fendi DNA with a perfect blend of Italian design and Swiss watchmaking expertise.

Since 1988, the Italian Maison has brought together passion for innovation and love for using precious materials in a unique way. Fendi Timepieces offers three iconic collections, Policromia, Fendi IShine and Selleria, and four signature collections, Fendi My Way, Run Away, Chameleon and Momento Fendi. From elegant and sophisticated models for women to sporty and masculine watches for men, each piece is highly recognizable with a strong identity and unique design features delivering the wow factor that today’s customer looks for.

We speak to Domenico Oliveri, the CEO of Fendi Timepieces, about his mission to make the Italian house one of the leading names in watch innovation.

Who is a Fendi customer?

We have a younger audience as a brand and the millennial audience is becoming more important. We want to appeal to those customers in a sophisticated way. We look at what our customer may want, but we always stay faithful to the brand DNA.

Is Run Away collection an answer to the logomania?

There is a trend of logo in the market that we recognise and the answer for us was this new logo called F is Fendi. Karl Lagerfeld described it as a surprising F because it’s upside down, very different from the previous logo which is a rectangle. We have taken this concept and transported it onto new watches for women and for men. It’s very sophisticated, we worked a lot on the shape of the watch and the details. For the first time in more than five years, we have a watch with a strong appearance both for men and women, which was not the case in the past.

What do today’s customers want in a watch?

I believe the customer today doesn’t want to just buy a piece. They need to buy something more, with a story, a bond with a brand and that’s what we have to create.

What do you feel is important for the Middle East customer?

Middle Eastern customers love design and precious material, so a mix of those with newness and innovation is very important.

Tell us more about the personalisation service.

The customer is becoming more sensitive and more knowledgeable and also they want to express their personality through the accessories and in this case, a watch. Having a possibility to personalise the watch is a way to express personality so it’s a trend that we are following in many different ways. With iShine you can personalise the dial, but Fendi Policromia is really unique. It can be assembled with many materials—stone, diamond, gold or emerald. We can create more than 100,000 combinations of the same watch. You can buy Policromia in a boutique, but then we organize events where we invite our most affluent customers to sit with our designer at a computer and build their own watch. It becomes unique to them. We are the only ones doing this and I think we have been successful so far.

How important is innovation?

Innovation is a soul of this company. Our motto is “nothing is impossible.” In our mind we never stop, if a good idea arrives we go through and see and then we do it.

We are a watch business inside a luxury business which is a peculiar point of view. We are not in watchmaking, we don’t compete with those. Customers are becoming for educated and a customer today can have anything so you need to offer something special and it’s not easy. We want to be  unpredictable and surprising so they can say ‘this is something worth buying’ because it’s different.

What challenges do you face?

One of the challenges the watch business has, especially when it’s part of a Maison, is to mix fashion with watchmaking. It’s something that we try to do and we do it in an interesting way. We like to surprise our customer and overcome their expectations.

What are your goals for Fendi Timpieces?

We are in a process of being recognised as one of most innovative brands in the market and we have love for innovation and quality and craftsmanship. Our main aim is to be creative, push the boundaries so we will keep surprising the customer and give them innovative chic products that are unique.

Trains Ruled Supreme At The Met Gala 2018

Just in case Met Gala dressing wasn’t dramatic enough, a number of celebrities chose long trains to add even more wow factor to the red carpet.

Sarah Jessica Parker stepped out in a golden Dolce & Gabbana gown with a long intricately designed train gliding behind her as she posed in front of the photographers. The battle of longest train was between Blake Lively, Diane Kruger, Nicki Minaj and Rita Ora who almost needed their separate red carpet to show the full mastery of their dresses.

Amal Clooney’s and Ariana Grande’s train not only had length, but plenty of volume, meanwhile Zendaya kept it subtle in a shimmering Versace ensemble.

EXCLUSIVE: Moda Operandi Launches Permanent Homeware Destination

First time in Dubai, founder of Moda Operandi Lauren Santo Domingo is positively giddy to reveal the news that they have launched a whole new part of the business dedicated to everything fabulous for your home.

“We were talking about adding a new category and Home was the last thing we were thinking of doing, and this week we did so much sales, so we all decided that we are launching into Home. Based on our intelligence from the past three collections with Cabana and what we’ve done this week, we are launching into a full blown Home section in June.”

Speaking exclusively to us about this latest venture, she reveals that she has been thinking about this new addition to the platform for some time, and finally the right moment came with shoppers in the Middle East proving to be the most enthusiastic:

“One of our biggest customer basis for Home are from this region and what’s fascinating is that in Hong Kong or New York, women are buying things for sets of four, and here they’re buying sets for 300. It’s incredible. It immediately resonated with this region.”

Expanding into a more lifestyle destination seemed like a no-brainer for Domingo and she is determined to nurture the brands they have on board, and encourage other names to start offering homeware to their clients.

“We have a lot of fashion designers that we’re working with that want to grow their business and we are able to say to them ‘well lets look at the designers in the past, lets look at your business, you’re launching into Home, you’re a lifestyle brand now’. And we can help support them in a meaningful way and we have the data to really support them and they all have a unique point of view.”

So is this the next major step other designers should be considering? Domingo thinks so:

“A lot of the designers that we are working with, although they may be considered new like Erdem, Emilia Wickstead, Proenza Schouler, a lot of them are 10 years old and this is exactly the next step for them.”

Some of the Home collection is available online now with the full range launching in the summer. Make sure to pick up our June issue to read the full interview with Lauren Santo Domingo where we further discover the universe of Moda Operandi.

Expert Skincare At Home With Alpha-H

Michelle Doherty

Less product, less time and more effective results. Doesn’t that sound like a dream combination? Well dream no more as Alpha-H have everything you need for a flawless complexion.

Australian brand has been gradually growing their fan base around the world for years with Michelle Doherty at the helm sharing her in-depth knowledge of everything skin and striving to help customers get the best possible results. The brand hit the cult status with the release of Liquid Gold with one being sold every minute of every hour. What makes it a must-have on any beauty shelf? It targets almost every skin concern and can be used on it’s own up to three nights a week without adding a serum or cream.

Despite a history stretching back over twenty years, the core message remains unchanged; Alpha-H is committed to achieving clinical results with minimal effort and zero downtime. Here we speak to Doherty about how she grew her beauty empire and get tips on the best ways to look after our skin.

Newest launch, Liquid Gold Firming eye cream.

What sets Alpha-H apart?

Minimum effort, minimum amount of product you add to your skin but maximum gain. I’m not dissing any brand, but you take Korean beauty for example, with every layer of product you add to your skin you add more preservatives. A lot of the time it’s the problems we create because we’re doing too much and we’re not allowing the skin to function as it should. Our approach is key ingredients with a minimal amount of time, all our products are sustainable as they’re multi-functional.

How has the beauty industry changed?

The consumer is driving the growth because they want to be with brands that are honest and have that engagement. We have customer care and beauty advisors around the globe. We are good at listening to our customers.

Why is Liquid Gold such a phenomenon?

It’s a game changer. Three nights a week you can retire your serum, your toner, your exfoliator, your moisturiser and just use Liquid Gold and it’s going to work as well as all these products.

How do we use individual vitamins on our skin?

We really encourage our customer to see what their day looks like for their skin. If you’re going to be indoors then you grab your vitamin B because you want to have that extra hydration. If you’re going to be outdoors on the beach, then you’d go for your vitamin C because it will shield the skin from more UV damage and prevent the manufacturing of pigmentation. If you want comfort then choose vitamin E. We are not getting the same level of nutrition and vitamins from our food because of the soil being so depleted in nutrients, so it makes sense to put vitamins on the skin.

Liquid Gold.

What have you noticed about skincare in the region?

They tend to cover problems up than treat them. I did that for 14 years and so it was liberating for me to have this freedom of not getting up and putting eight layers of makeup on. I find here that they would buy a thicker concealer or a thicker foundation when perhaps it’s better to treat the skin. And you can’t just do one cleanse, you have to double cleanse.

What products would you recommend for this region?

Vitamin profiling because it gives you options, you can pick what your skin needs. Definitely SPF and we formulate ours at 50+ which is wearable and works as moisturiser and a primer.

Can you describe your morning and evening beauty regimes?

Really minimal. I cleanse in the morning with a Triple Action Cleanser, then a vitamin serum either B or C and SPF, and if I’m busy I’ll put on the Daily Essential moisturiser. In the evening I love my ‘lazy girl’ nights on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays which are my Liquid Gold nights, and on other nights I use my Vitamin A Serum followed by Vitamin E and then I use the Liquid Gold Firming eye cream and my Liquid Gold cream.

What advice would you share with women thinking of launching their own business?

You want to create a product with a point of difference as you’re competing with aggressive companies that have a lot of weight behind them. What we’ve done is create genius formulation. I’m always looking at keeping a very tight collection and to make sure we’re always relevant. We launched a mist last year that helps to neutralize blue light rays and anti-pollution so we’re always looking at current concerns, and the fact that all these technologies created a new type of ageing for the skin.

What’s the next skin concern remedy you’re working on?

Over sensitivity, when people are using too many products and products that are not compatible with one another.

Vitamin Profiling.

Do you have a beauty muse?

Years ago, before I created Alpha-H, I was in pharmacy and used to work for Elizabeth Arden and used to sell Mary Quant, which is an iconic English brand. She inspired me for standing out and being different and being okay with being different.

Best advice you’ve ever received?

It’s okay to make a mistake, it’s how you move forward. Don’t be afraid of failure.

Tea or coffee?

Coffee, but I’d like to be more herbal tea.

Who do you follow on Instagram?

I follow lots of people on Instagram. I love natural girls, women who can communicate on how it really is.

Do you use any apps on your phone?

A lot of fitness ones I look at every day and wish I had time to do it! And I also listen to podcasts.

Last book you read?

A really scary book called ‘Good Me, Bad Me’.

What’s on your playlist?

All sorts of things. Relaxing music to help me unwind. I like R&B, I like Iggy Azalea, Snoop Dog but I tend now to love Sam Smith. All sorts of music.

Sleep Power Peel

Last movie you saw?

I watch all the movies on the plane. I love TV series like Billions and Victoria.

Your dream travel destination?

I’m very at home when I’m in England and I like to holiday in Dubai, Hawaii and New Zealand.

What is your long-term vision for Alpha-H?

Becoming more sustainable. We are making small changes often which will make a big a change for the planet.

Alpha-H is available at Bloomingdale’s, Dubai Mall.

Ritz-Paris Hotel auction off 10,000 pieces of antique furniture including Coco Chanel’s desk.

The glittering property was home to the famous designer and from the Coco Chanel Suite, a desk and chair sold for $223,860, which is 300 times the it’s estimate. Chanel lived in a second-floor suite from 1937 until her death in 1971 with the space becoming one of the key fashion landmarks in Paris.

Following hotel’s recent renovation, certain pieces of furniture as well as chandeliers, vintage bed linens, bathrobes, rugs, statues and art did not fit in with the new style and were in need of a new home. The total from the auction hit an impressive $8,952,337, setting a world record that’s almost nine times the estimated total of about $1 million.
