Audemars Piguet Publishes Its First Book On 20th Century Complicated Wristwatches

Luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet announces its first-ever book dedicated to the history of the manufacturer’s one-of-a-kind wristwatches, after four years of in-depth research completed by the Heritage Department.

From the world’s first wristwatch crafted in 1892 until the revival of complications in the late 1970s, Audemars Piguet produced an exclusive total of only 550 complicated wristwatches, of which not even two are identical- includes 35 minute repeaters, 188 calendar wristwatches, 307 chronograph wristwatches and 20 double complication wristwatches featuring calendar and chronograph at once.

Finally, the full story of Audemars Piguet’s complicated wristwatches is shared with the world for the very first time. Consists of detailed photography, rich cultural narratives, first generation archival documents, technical specifications and production data.

Dating back to the Qaurtz Crisis in the late ’70s, the book also tells the story of the revival of the complications; during the time of change in the industry. A time where Audemars Piguet shifted the focus back to complications, setting the standards and aesthetics to impeccable productions and innovation through the ’80s and ’90s into the 21st century.

Since the birth of Audemars Piguet, the company strives to push the boundaries in the creation of the complicated wristwatch, but in the same time to embrace their very own form of language and signature design.

Cate Blanchett Leads A Women’s March On The Red Carpet In Cannes Calling Out For Change In The Industry

On Saturday May 12th, Cate Blanchett called for gender equality by leading a Women’s March on the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival.

Taking place on the steps of the Palais, the jury president was joined by 81 women from the film industry, including jurors Kristen Stewart, Ava DuVernay, Marion Cotillard, Salma Hayek, and Patty Jenkins.

According to statistics the number of participants referenced the number of women who have competed at Cannes over its 71-years in history; where in fact 1,645 films have been directed by men.

Blanchett sets the record straight in a powerful speech- “On these steps today stand 82 women representing the number of female directors who have climbed these stairs since the first edition of the Cannes Film Festival in 1946. In the same period 1688 male directors have climbed these very same stairs. In the 71 years of this world-renowned festival there have been 12 female heads of its juries. The prestigious Palme d’Or has been bestowed upon 71 male directors—too numerous to mention by name—but only two women.”

“Women are not a minority in the world, yet the current state of our industry says otherwise,” Blanchett continued. “As women, we all face our own unique challenges, but we stand together on these steps today as a symbol of our determination and our commitment to progress. We are writers, we are producers, we are directors, actresses, cinematographers, talent agents, editors, distributors, sales agents, and all of us are involved in the cinematic arts. And we stand today in solidarity with women of all industries.”

Legendary director Agnes Varda concluded the speech by adding, “The stairs of our industry must be accessible to all. Let’s climb.”

A similar version to the #MeToo movement known as 5050×2020 organized this event at the festival. Women of the industry take a historic stand at Cannes with an extremely important message, where Blanchett with the help of actresses and Hollywood executives make several demands for change.

We Found Best… Restaurants To Have Iftar In Beirut

There’s nothing more meaningful than breaking a fast with table surrounded by loved ones over delicious food. The holy month of Ramadan is just around the corner, it is a perfect reminder of how we often take things for granted, and especially food being the main example. From Fattouch to oven-roasted chicken and beyond, here is our Ramadan edit of the best restaurants to enjoy a tasteful iftar found in Beirut. Ramadan Mubarak!

Abd El Wahab

For many years, Abd El Wahab has gained a high reputation within the Lebanese Cuisine in Lebanon and internationally. Named after the street it located at, the décor features a rich oriental touch with stunning damascene walls made out brass, giving off the right ambiance to enjoy the authentic Lebanese hospitality. Similarly to the extravagant setting, the food is also impeccable; enjoy their massive variety of Lebanese mezzes, along with a typical grilled meat and chicken selection. And don’t forget to leave room for dessert!

Mosaic Restaurant- Phoenicia Hotel

Mosaic is an all-day restaurant at Phoenicia Hotel; guests are welcomed for breakfast, lunch and dinner around a generously full buffet. A must try is their Ramadan buffet that is always impressively tasty, and full of options from Lebanese food to Italian, Japanese and a beautiful colourful dessert section.

Em Sherif

For a different Iftar dining experience, Em Sherif is the place to go. Full of innovative Lebanese dishes, their Iftar set menu is one of its kind, serving nearly three-dozen dishes one dinner table. We love the bite-size manaeesh, also a must try is the eggplant fattouch drenched in pomegranate molasses; and you better save some room for their famous Oum Ali dessert (hot bread pudding served soaked in sweetened milk, raisins, and coconut).

Babel- Dbayeh

Situated between temple style walls, Babel is an authentic Lebanese restaurant but served with a special twist. Everything from hommos to the tabbouleh and even the kebbe is prepared with unexpected recipes. A rich menu full of tasty choices, but their desserts are on a whole different level, where they bring out a mix between traditional Arabic and oriental sweets.
Onno Bistro

Known as one the best homemade Lebanese Armenian restaurant in country, Onno Bistro is the place where your taste buds will experience a new kind of spectacle with a unique presentation. From the sourness Zeytov Dolma (stuffed eggplants with rice, olive oil, served with yogurt) to the kebab served with red cherry chutney and covered with toasted cashew nuts and almonds, Onno will keep you coming back for more.

After visiting the stellar theme for the fall season, but this time around Miuccia Prada never short of attitude, brings back the ‘90s in full force, staged in the vibrant city that never sleeps. Designs were reminiscent of the iconic Glen Luchford’s Prada featuring Amber Valettaa; introducing a series of short-sleeved turtlenecks, narrow-waisted silhouettes and heavy gauge tights.

Inspired by the techno-modest era of the ‘90s, there were lots of geometric prints, delicate fabric, tailored shapes. Featuring an athleisure touch with typical mix-match of minimalism and maximalism, making it Prada’s most memorable.

“It’s a kind of fantasy of reality” Miuccia describes her multi-coloured collection backstage. The muted yet vibrant palette of funky patterns, including oversized jacquard hats with frilled details and the ever-essential presence of the logo, gave the restrained collection the perfect balance suitable for transitional dressing.

Beyond Fashion: Lebanese Designer Tony Ward Supporting Art

As part of an initiative supporting arts and creativity, Lebanese designer Tony Ward hosted two emerging artists in the heart of his fashion house on April 24. Welcoming local architects, interior designers, and gallery owners along with VIP clienteles to discover this one-of-a-kind collaboration where fashion meets art.

Two extreme worlds merged, the captivating paintings of Nada Matta smoothly collided with the dynamic steel sculptures of Nayla Kai Saroufim.

Nada Matta

Nada Matta’s poetic paintings shine light on a particular theme under the title “Racines En Vol”; displaying the tale of leaves and tree trunks in an incredible concentration of stains and lines. The detail-oriented artist leans more to pure black and white, with an occasional mixed of unexpected pop of colour.

Nayla Kai Saroufim

As for Nayla Kai Saroufim’s playful installations, it is the story of an invasion of characters taking over Tony Ward’s showroom; starting with the vitrine, all throughout the three floors, disrupting the usual routine of the Tony Ward building.

The exhibition will run until May 31st at the Tony Ward headquarters in Achrafieh, Beirut.
