Bulgari Teams Up With The Luxury Hive To Create Special Heritage Events Across The Middle East

The luxury Italian retailer has formed a partnership with Dubai-based company The Luxury Hive with a mission to spread the knowledge about the brand’s rich heritage.

Although you might know the name Bulgari and might know a thing or two about the fashion house’s design style, you’re probably not as clued up as you should be when it comes to the history of the Italian brand.

Because having been born in Rome in 1884, the jewellery, watch and perfume creator has a hefty history behind it, led the way forward and pathed the bath for other designers coming up behind it over the years.

Three Botanical-Inspired Restaurants and Lounges in Dubai for a Temporary City Escape

Make an escape from the concrete jungle over dinner and drinks thanks to theses greenery-filled, botanically inspired venues in Dubai.

While we wouldn’t change our city lives, sometimes we need to disconnect from the concrete landscape of towers and flickering lights, even if that’s just an hour or so over a dinner that reconnects us with nature. From restaurants that have menus that are inspired by the earth to lounge-style eateries that go overboard with shrubbery, here are some of the best botanical-inspired eateries in the city to escape to.

The London Project

Both the menu and the scenery will bring you back to nature at The London Project

Both the menu and the scenery will bring you back to nature at The London Project

Still a relative newcomer, this quirky restaurant has quickly become one of our favourite places to spend an evening. Standing on the newly opened Bluewaters Island, even the location glancing over at The Palm, JBR and the Marina across the waters adds a sense of separation from the city. As soon as you approach the venue, greenery surrounds you, from the picture-worthy entrance to the plants hanging, potted and draped around the entire venue as decor. With a delightful menu that brings together sweet and savoury in a unique way with flavour combinations such as strawberry and avocado or coffee and beetroot salads to chargrilled tiger prawns with salsa chilli coconut and mint dressing that measure up, it’s as satisfying for the stomach as for the eyes. The drinks are just as refreshing as the unique earthy dishes, and the service is both warm and attentive.

Flair No5

Flair No5 is the perfect after work getaway from hustle and bustle

After a trying day in the office, stop by for a few exotic beverages and nibbles to re-awaken your love for all things plant at this DIFC joint. The colour palette is just as jungle-esque as the digestible offerings on this rooftop, and the herb-infused drinks and floral-inspired sharing menus are a delight.  Think dishes such as Padron peppers with Persian feta pistachios or crispy tuna tartare with balsamic and honey. With different themes and event most nights, you could stop by on a Wednesday to listen to some live saxophone playing crossed with deep house music or Wonderland themes event every Monday.

The Secret Garden

Secret Garden in the Address Downtown offers incredible views of the Burj Khalifa

Secret Garden in the Address Downtown offers incredible views of the Burj Khalifa

Okay, so it might not be an escape from the towering building of Dubai city with one of the greatest views of the Burj Khalifa about, but with such a name and menu, you’ll definitely feel a little closer to nature after a meal at this Address Downtown venue. Secret Garden’s beautiful foliage within the venue contrasts with the manmade marvels surrounding it, making dinners feel like they’ve stumbled onto a rural secret in an urban setting, with a fresh menu to match. But with exotic fruit and herb-infused drinks that are not your average, it’s worth popping in for a refreshing beverage and well as a tasty meal.

The Valmont Skincare Picks To Explore as the First Store Opens in Region

While Swiss cosmetic brand Valmont is beloved in Europe, it’s now finally making its mark in the UAE by opening its first concession store in the Galeries Lafayette within The Dubai Mall. And as the doors swing open, here are the top three skincare buys to invest in to fall in love with the brand.

As of April 2019,  a new dose of Swiss skincare had arrived in Dubai in a quest of winning over the Middle Eastern audience. While those who are familiar with the European of Asian beauty market might be familiar with the cosmetics brand, Valmont is a relative newcomer to this side of the world.

While the first physical skincare product was launched by Valmont in the 1980s, the name of the brand and its core in cosmetics had long been established by the time it became a retail item.

Back in 1905, the Valmont Clinic was established just on the banks of Lake Geneva in Switzerland. It became a sought after destination for treatments such as hydrotherapy, and later when on to delve into the world of cosmetic surgery.

Valmont opened in The Dubai Mall selling all four lines under the umbrella

But when the first product was released – the Renewing Pack that is still a best seller – Valmont knew this was the right direction. Now in 2019, the now has an entire line of skincare products, spas and individual stores around the world, and three other names under its umbrella: Storie Veneziane perfumes, L’elixir Des Glaciers skincare and Il Profvmo perfumes.

So if you’re heading to The Dubai Mall to check out the collections any time soon, then here are the three products you need to introduce you to the brand.

Prime Renewing Pack

It’s the first product to be released by the brand, and it’s still the most beloved. The creamy, non-greasy mask works to fight the sights of skin fatigue and smooth out the skin, giving it a texture and brightness overhaul. Apply a thin layer and leave for 3-5 minutes before removing, and use daily or when required.

DetO2x Cream

A lighter, whipped cream-like texture, this pot of magic is designed as a special detox for lacklustre skin.  The formula oxygenates the skin in order to help to detoxify and plump out tired complexions. To be applied lightly to the face and neck after serums.

Valmont Hydra3 Regenetic Serum

Serum works as an extra layer of protection for the skin, and can also help your moisturiser – always the final step in your skincare routine – to go the extra mile. This Valmont edition promotes skin’s own hydration techniques to visibly improve tone and suppleness as well as hydrate when used all over the face and neck before bed.

Shamim Kassibawi, Founder of Play: Date, Talks Challenges of Working in the Tech World

Shamim Kassibawi, the Founder of the Play: Date app joins the a&e team for Morning Coffee to discuss where she got the inspiration for the Dubai-founded app and what’s at the core of her brand.

After being surrounded by her nieces and nephews, Shamim Kassibawi thought there must be an easier way for kids in Dubai (with a huge expat community) to meet, play and bond with kids their age outside of a school setting.

That’s when Shamim – who is from a Kiwi-Arab background and who worked as a publicist before becoming an entrepreneur – came up with the concept of Play: Date. The app allows parents to set up get-togethers for their kids with children of similar age and with likewise interests, and even includes offers for family-friendly activities.

Talking to the a&e team over Morning Coffee, the Founder further delves into the idea behind the app and the biggest challenges she faces in the world of tech.

Watch the full interview with Shamim above, and find out what we learned chatting with her below.

Five Things We Learned Talking to  Shamim Kassibawi Over Morning Coffee

The Play:Date app was launched approximately two years ago

The Play: Date app was launched approximately two years ago

A positive start to the day is key

The app concept creator explained how she starts her day by listening to gratitude videos on YouTube, as she feels it’s crucial to start her day in a positive way. She continues: “I avoid emails until I actually get into the office.”

The inspiration behind Play: Date

After living with four of her nieces and nephews for a decade, she came up with the idea of the app explaining: “I realised that kids start engaging at a really young age. I also realised that my sister’s oldest is not as social as her youngest, she started speaking earlier… She’s a lot more alert, she just picks everything up so quickly. And I realised a lot of kids that come to Dubai might not make friends straight away when they come to school. So why don’t we make a fun way for friends to meet up or for families to set up play dates.”

On evolving technology

The biggest challenge Shamim said she faces is keeping up with ever-evolving technology. She explained: “I think technology is just so challenging. It evolves everyday so nobody is a real expert at it.  Tomorrow Facebook might come up with a new format and it might throw us off because we log in through Facebook. Android might come up with a new phone and that means we have to design a whole new platform. Getting my head around it has been really tough.”

Richard Branson is her biggest inspiration

“Without a doubt,” the Founder told us. She added: “There is a book called Screw It, Let’s Do It  – he wrote it – literally, that is my life. If I come up with a concept today, tomorrow it’s online.”

Don’t sweat the small stuff

Is Shamim’s personal motto. She elaborated: “Let it go… Just move on, I don’t let things get to me no matter how big or small they are. Tomorrow is a new day.”

Seez Creator Andrew Kabrit on the Place of AI in the Modern Workplace

The COO and Co-Founder of Seez – a regional and intuitive car selling, buying and lending app – catches up with the a&e team over Morning Coffee.

When his friend was curious about the price of a Mini he spotted, little did he and Andrew Kabrit know that that curiosity would lead to the creation of Seez, a leading app for fair car sales across Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

In fact, when speaking to the a&e team over Morning Coffee, he revealed that was the springboard for the app that quickly changed to solve a real problem in the industry, becoming a fully efficient ‘search engine’ for cars.

And now with a successful digital startup, Andrew discusses the role and evolution of AI within his work and  the region at large.

Watch the full interview Andrew above, and find out what we learned talking with him below.

Five Things We Learned Talking To Andrew Kabrit Over Morning Coffee

Andrew Kabrit talks through his professional motto over Morning Coffee

The future of AI now

With it being at the forefront of his company and career success, the place of AI in the modern world is clearly important to Andrew. On that, he told us: “Generally, AI allows people to do things that were previously seen as a luxury. AI can do some rudimentary tasks that people would usually do but that requires a lot of thinking and analysis to do that. Previously the first generation of computers allowed you to just calculate things… Now you can take it a layer deeper and start doing several calculations at once and gain a deeper understanding of the data. [In simple terms], it’s closer to how we think, allowing us to negotiate… search and sort much more efficiently. Things that would usually require some sort of human intervention, can now be automated and drastically reduce the cost.”

On placing value on your team

When it comes to one of the biggest challenges he’s had to overcome so far, Andrew told us that finding the right team was a major one. He said: “Everyone here will tell you finding the right talent is hard… You’re going to be spending hours with the people you hire, and if you hire the wrong people you’re going to regret it for a long time. Finding the right people while still growing fast is hard.”

His professional motto is…

“Do things that you’re afraid of doing.” The entrepreneur added: “If you’re doing a startup – or in general if you’re a professional – you’re going to do stuff that makes you uncomfortable or makes you scared. And it’s very very natural to have that feeling. But the ability to overcome that is what’s going to differentiate you from everyone else.”

Be more humble

Is what the COO would tell his younger self. The Seez creator elaborated: “Be more humble from the start and accept that there’s a lot of information you don’t know. Accept that it’s a long journey and you’re never going to understand everything, so ask more questions… And don’t try to act as you know it.”

What Andrew says ‘no’ to

The app creator told us: “If it’s something that requires a lot of man-hours, something that can’t be automated and done on its own, then I often say no to it. We’ve been offered some really good opportunities that require a lot of overhead… While those can be very very big projects we say ‘no’ to them because the core of who are… requires us to take an approach that doesn’t require a lot of human capital.”

Arab Fashion Week 2019: The UAE Designers Showcasing Their Collections

As Arab Fashion Week kicks off for 2019, here are some of the home-grown fashion labels to look out for.

Between April 24-28th, designers from across the region will gather at Dubai’s City Walk to display their collections and explore the growing fashion trends within the Middle East

Across the week, there will be 27 shows to marvel over and explore. And to celebrate the homegrown talent, here are the fashion labels born right here in the UAE that have earned themselves a spot on the show schedule.

Aiisha Ramadan

The eponymously named fashion label was born in the UAE in 2007 and aims to create feminine designs that can be appreciated by women all over the globe. Creator Aiisha, who was born in Lebanon, studied fashion design in the American Univerity of Dubai before opening her brand with which she aimed to cherish the art of couture and later introduced bridal and ready-to-wear in 2013. Famous faces such as Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lopez and Aishwarya Rai have donned the label.

BLSSD

Introducing a local fashion brand with a heart. BLSSD was created in 2015 by Lama Riachi. As a cancer survivor, Riachi aimed to make a brand that connected with gratitude instead of simply aesthetics while giving back to fellow survivors. The designs mix urban ready-to-wear looks, and the trademark statement of BLSSD is Pret A Gratitude.

Baravia

The local fashion store focuses on creating playful occasion, evening and wedding gowns for the young vibrant woman. Created by Uzbekistan-born designer Gulnora Muhedinova, each garment demonstrates her love of art. After opening her own beauty centre in 2015, her fashion label was only born in 2018, so is a relative newcomer to the local fashion scene.

Yara Bin Shakar

This Emirati fashion designer takes her inspiration from vintage Hollywood glamour. The fashion house prides itself on creating comfortable and practical ensembles collections that remain on trend, and are wearable from day to night.  While Yara Bin Shakar strives to cater to all types of women, traditionally feminine designs are at the heart of her collections.

Sara Al Madani

Born and raised in Sharjah, Sara Al Madani has grown up around Emirati fashion, watching it grow over the years. And from the age of 15, she had been conceptualising her own fashion label after being dissatisfied with the purely black abayas available on the market. Now, she runs her successful fashion house that is loved by many, and have even taken her creative hand to the food industry, a creative consultancy and a new tech company.

ARSHYS

Sharing a sense of identities and believes through clothes is as the core of this contemporary womenswear label.  Established in early 2017 by Emirati fashion designer Arshia Alam, her brand champions sustainability by working on designs in small batches to eliminate waste, and carrying on any leftover fabrics into new seasons.

Leadership Coach Nancy Zakharia Ohanessian’s Advice on How to Stay Positive

Leadership Coach Nancy Zakharia Ohanessian joins the a&e team for Morning Coffee and talks staying positive, managing anger and the relationship between Instagram and self-esteem.

While she says balancing work life and motherhood has been (and still is) one of the biggest challenges she faces, considering Nancy Zakharie Ohanessian studied relentlessly to achieve her current qualifications while also working full time and looking after two young children, we can’t help but think she’s doing a great job at it.

And while that is impressive enough, the Leadership Coach states there is still so much she wants to achieve both personally and academically, all while maintaining her positive outlook on life along the way.

Joining the a&e team for Morning Coffee, Nancy chats through her approach to having a positive attitude in life, her thoughts on dealing with anger and the advice she would give her younger self.

Watch the full interview with Nancy above, and find out what we learned chatting with her below.

Five Things We Learned Talking To Nancy Zakharia Ohanessian Over Morning Coffee

Nancy Zakharia Ohanessian shares her words of wisdom over Morning Coffee

Nancy Zakharia Ohanessian shares her words of wisdom over Morning Coffee

On staying positive

When it comes to feeling more positive day-to-day, Nancy advises: “We need to be intentional about staying positive. It’s all about changing our perspective about how we look at things and looking at things from a place of abundance rather than scarcity. Building on the strength we have rather than focusing on what we don’t have.”

On dealing with anger

For many people, anger is a natural instinct when facing troubling times in their lives. On that notion, the expert commented: “Anger is one of the most disempowering habits that can prevent us from achieving our full potential. What I want to tell them is to remind themselves they are in control and not to allow emotions to take power over them. So instead of giving their power away from anger and allowing external events to shape who they are and how they feel. It is taking responsibility for their reactions.”

Work-life balance is her biggest challenge

When asked what the biggest challenge is that she’s had to overcome to get where she is today, Nancy said: “The biggest challenge was – and still is – to manage and juggle all that I want to do with family life, I’m a mum of two young children.”  While saying she is still facing this struggle, Nancy explained that at one point she was looking after her little ones while working a full-time job and studying to get her qualifications and travelling a lot. But she said it’s about finding that rhythm.

Grow is a journey, not a destination

…Is what Nancy said when asked what she wants to achieve. She elaborated: “So there are still lots of things that I aspire to do and achieve, on the academic side I still have the big dream of pursuing a PhD in psychology or human development and definitely being a master coach. On the other side, I really want to increase the geography on my impact on more and more people.”

Be more fearless…

… Is the advice Nancy would give her younger self.

Three Ways to Wear Chunky Sneakers As Trend Steps Into Spring 2019

You may have tried to resist the chunky sneakers trend, but as the oversized shoe bounced its way into another season, here’s how to don the look now you’ve finally given it.

We did oversized coats and oversized jumpers, but now it’s the oversized shoewear that’s taking over. In particular, ugly trainers have become more and more in vogue, the designs playing into the nineties aesthetics that’s ruled the runway over the last few years.

The likes of Balenciaga, Chloe, Isabel Marant, MCM, Givenchy and Fendi have played into the trend, presenting chunky sneakers in all shades and shapes.  So whether you’ve finally tapped into the trend and made a new purchase or you’re looking for inspiration to revamp your favourite pair, here are three ways to style the look.

Full Athleisure

Isabel Marant SS19

Isabel Marant SS19

The most obvious way to work the look is to cast your new shoes as an ensemble piece in your athleisure look.  This can be teamed with anything from leggings to running gear, but the key is not to drown the shoes with something oversized or overflowing on your lower half. For the daring, this can be teaming the bounding-out shoes with skin-tight cycling shorts (that are no longer reserved for cycling) with a loose fitting long sleeve tee, to add some balance.

Feminine Touch

MCM SS19

MCM SS19

The ballgown dress with sneakers trend came and went,  but the feminine twist on the ‘dad’ shoe style is still a strong look. This time around, team your thick-soled kicks with a pleated, shin-length skirt and a cropped tee or jumper, or with a shorter dress. A full-length dress with oversized shoes might be overpowering, on the other hand.

Office Attire

Balenciaga SS19

Balenciaga SS19

Can you really get away with wearing sneakers to the office? Not least, chunky, look-at-me sneakers? With the right wardrobe, it can be done. Stick to more simplistic designs and muted colours when it comes to your footwear, and team it with a more tailored look – tapered trousers with a matching suit jacket in an equally simplistic design.

This Emirati Photographer’s New Exhibition Explores Abandoned Industrial Landscapes In The UAE

Emirati photographer Jalal Bin Thaneya’s ‘Beyond The Fence’ exhibition opens in Dubai this month in Tashkeel, and it will be his first solo exhibition.

After the wave of Art Dubai and World Art Dubai earlier this year, we’re after the next cultural happenings to spend our weekends pondering over. And it turns out we’re in luck, as Emirati Photographer Jalal Bin Thaneya is just about to present his body of work in a solo exhibition in Dubai.

Taking place in the Tashkeel gallery – which was established in 2008 by Lateefa bint Maktoum – the exhibition will be his first solo curation. Members and guests will be able to marvel over his thought-provoking pieces from Apil 30th until June 10th.

Jalal Bin Thaneya focuses on society's relationship with modernity

Jalal Bin Thaneya focuses on society’s relationship with modernity

An industrial fine arts photographer, the local artist is known for his exploration of the tension between abandoned industrial landscapes within the UAE and society at large, that often have an eery  – almost ghostly – feel. His work is characterised by large format compositions.

But this new exhibition will likewise showcase new work from the local talent, as Jalal captures the results of the living in a modern world, in particular, the knock-on effects that are hidden from society’s view, such as metal-filled scrap yards. Honing in on the details is what makes his work particularly striking.

To date, the self-taught photographer has only had his work displayed in group exhibition in places such as the Sharjah Art Foundation and The Empty Quarter Gallery.

Talib Hashim, Managing Director at TBH, on Why He’s Inspired to Work with Local Youth

Talib Hashim joins the a&e team for Morning Coffee as he discusses everything from his energising morning routine to the one thing he’d tell his younger self.

After beginning his career working in a bank, Talib Hashim made a brave move to seize a new opportunity.

When a friend gave him a nudge to move into the headhunting world, Talib rebranded the consultancy to Next Level – a name that reflected a metaphor for his own career change, too.

In his line of work, the Managing Director particularly focuses on helping young people train for work in the real world and move into successful careers, and it was this aspect of the career jump that made him feel as though he was really tapping into his full potential.

Talking to a&e over Morning Coffee, Talib shares his biggest achievements and personal mottos as he details his career to date.

Watch the full interview above, and find out what we learned chatting with him below.

Five Things We Learned Talking To Talib Hashim Over Morning Coffee

Talib Hashim talks through his career goals and mottos over Morning Coffee

Talib Hashim talks through his career goals and mottos over Morning Coffee

Mornings are about ‘energising’

The MD tells us that whether spiritually, mentally or physically, he makes his mornings about energising himself for the day in some way. For example he “takes a cold shower every day” as it’s the first decision that day to step outside his comfort zone.

Why he’s inspired to work with young people

“For me, there are two reasons – both personal and business-related – behind this interest with helping youth. A lot of them could be potential clients and customers given that the UAE and Dubai have so many instances of youth leadership. I’m also motivated because I really want to get them ready for the world of work. On a personal level, I’m driven because I used to be the young local youth and I was clueless about the world. I wish then I had access to a mentor to tell me what the world was really like.”

Talib still wants to achieve a lot

The Managing Director told us that it’s those questions that keep him awake at night that he still wants to conquer. He said: “I’m looking for the answers to questions that keep me awake at night.  How can we scale out business? How can we impact more people? How can we disrupt the market? Localisation here is just the beginning. We want to take this blueprint and see if we can adapt these learnings to other regions.”

His personal motto is…

“My personal motto would be nurture relationships, don’t burn bridges and don’t take thing personally. Focus on what you can add value to. I think it’s magical to believe in this. It gives you peace of mind. “

And the advice he would give his younger self…

If he could go back in time, Talib would tell his younger self not to wear white socks. Explaining, he said: “In my first interview when I was 18, the interviewer asked me ‘Are you coming for a job, or are you coming to play tennis?’ because I wore white socks. And I always think; what would have happened if I didn’t wear those white socks?”

Facial muscles that are responsible for expression wrinkles are targeted in particular, and the process is designed to activate microcirculation – the circulation of the blood in the smallest blood vessels. A deep back massage to help sculpt the body.

Abeille Royale Honey Repair

The power of honey will never cease to amaze us; aside from aiding in health, it works as an antibacterial agent and skin-soother in the realm of beauty. Which is why we’re booking in for this new repairing treatment that uses the Abeille Royale range. Ingredients in the mix included intensely nourishing black bee honey and inflammation- reducing royal jelly.

Fenty Beauty Is About to Branch into Skincare and Here’s What We Know To Date

Rihanna’s makeup line is soon to launch a matching skincare collection, and needless to say, we can’t wait.

Even before we laid our eyes (and fingertips) upon anything Fenty Beauty, we knew a collection of beauty product created with Rihanna’s vision in mind would be a success.

But we couldn’t have predicted just how essential the pop sensation’s beauty collection would be; it’s now a makeup bag essential for many of us. Rihanna not only won us over with her fun-loving, high-quality products but with the inclusiveness of the collection with products designed for all skin shades.

And thanks to the latest news from the musician turned entrepreneur, we’ll soon be able to grace our beauty shelves as well as our makeup bags with the all things Fenty Beauty, as a skincare range is on the way, too.

Fenty Skin is coming, but details are under wraps

Titled Fenty Skin, the new collection is thought to include “medicated and non-medicated skincare, soap, body care and personal care products” as a trademark application was filed for the name under those conditions.

While this news has leaked, the woman herself has kept quiet about the new launch to date.

Rana Nawas, the Founder of When Women Win Podcast, on the Importance of Female Role Models

Rana Nawas joins the a&e team for Morning Coffee to chat through the creation of her podcast series and why the medium is bigger than ever.

After 17 years working in a corporate setting, Rana Nawas noticed something about the working world that struck her as odd; that the pin for women had barely shifted across two decades, and furthermore that there were still so few visible role models for women to look up to.

Which is why in 2017, after reading one book that left her compelled to chat to the woman behind it, the former Oxford University and Harvard Business School student turned to podcasting.

When creating her When Women Win podcast, the Dubai-based speaker and writer thought her biggest struggle would be finding the inspirational women to chat with for the show. Instead, Rana found she had the exact opposite problem. Inspiring women with extraordinary stories were everywhere.

Talking to the a&e team over Morning Coffee, Rana explains why she thinks the medium of podcasting is so attainable, and who are the women that really inspire her the most.

Watch the full interview with Rana above, and see what we discovered while talking with her below.

Five Things We Learned Talking to Rana Nawas Over Morning Coffee

Rana Nawas, Founder of When Women Win podcast, talks through her podcasting journey to date

On what inspired the podcast

As well as the book that finally set things into motion, Rana explains it was more that than that kick-started the series. She said: “This was on my mind for a long time – the lack of female role models. So when women look up and they don’t see someone who looks like them, sounds like them, or has achieved what they want to achieve in life. It gives you that feeling you can’t make it. And that’s something I wanted to change.”

Strong women are everywhere

The When Women Win host told us: “When I started the podcast, I was like: ‘Where am I going to find all these female role models?’ But actually what I found is that there are so many incredible women out there. So many ordinary women doing extraordinary things. So many powerful stories. So the major content challenge has been which of these women to put on the show?”

Power of podcasting

Still haven’t fallen in love with podcasts? On their appeal, Rana explains: “Podcasting is growing globally at a massive rate and the reason in its a great secondary activity.  77 per cent of the people who listen to podcasts do so on the commute… It’s basically radio, but radio on demand and content that you have chosen.”

Working mums inspire her the most

After speaking to women from all walks of life, Rana told a&e: “It really is the everyday working mum who is keeping it together on a daily basis [that inspires me the most.] Who gets her kids to school, who works a corporate job, who’s an entrepreneur… And they still have energy and time at the end of the day for other relationships… These are my heroes.”

Her personal motto is…

“Look Good. Work Hard. Be Kind. Have Fun.”

The New Loewe X Paula’s Ibiza Collection With Net-a-Porter Will Have You Booking A Beach Escape

Nothing makes us surrender to summer like a glorious holiday collection. And as things start to hit peak temperatures where we are, we’re dreaming of blissful beach locations to sneak away to over the next few months.

And within that getaway vision, of course, is a collection of chic yet charismatic beachwear and accessories to suit the sandy, sun-setting ambience. Which is why we’re excited about Net-a-Porter’s drop of the third collection from Loewe x Paula’s Ibiza.

As for the bags, expect bold oranges and pinks over canvas and wicker fabrics, with luxe leather details in keeping with the ethos of Loewe. When it comes to beachwear, the Ibiza-inspired collection includes patchwork pattern trousers and boho frayed ponchos in soothing shades.

This will be Loewe’s third collaboration with the island boutique founded in the Seventies by Armin Heinemann. And this third instalment continues to draw upon an archive of print designs chosen by Jonathan Anderson – Loewe’s Creative Director. The line is a celebration of the heyday of the seaside location and how it mixes with the vibrancy and creativity of the iconic island.

To make packing for your next European seaside getaway that bit easier, we’ve picked the items we’re adding to our holiday list to share with you.

You Can Now Take A Personal Styling Session With Celebrity Stylist Kelly Lundberg

Celebrity Stylist and Author Kelly Lundberg will be teaming up with The College of Design and Fashion Dubai to launch a two-day style workshop.

Having launched her own personal styling business at the age of 24, Edinburgh-born stylist Kelly Lundberg knows a thing or two about putting an outfit together.

And it seems we’re not the only ones of that opinion, as the Dubai-based stylist has worked on styling both celebrities and members of the royal family throughout her career.

Which is why, whether you think you know what you’re doing in the style department or not, we recommend booking into Kelly’s latest course.

The business owner and author has teamed up with the CFD – College of Fashion and Design Dubai – to run a two-day workshop short course on May 3rd and 4th.

The two-day short course is titled The Art of Personal Styling and will focus on techniques that aspiring stylists can call upon. As well as talking through her own career and path to success, she will be covering topics such as defining and working with different body shapes, managing a wardrobe, creative colour module and practical personal styling session and more.

Kelly Lundberg will be sharing her wisdom over a two-day course

Previously, Kelly spoke to the a&e team about her incredible career to date over Morning Coffee. She said: “I’m originally from Edinburgh in Scotland in the Eighties, so my earliest fashion memory would’ve been waiting for those big catalogues being delivered. It used to be the best time because I would flick through it, no pocket money, but make my shopping list.

And on her motto she lives by, the Deseed the Lemon author told us: “My goal every day is to inspire a minimum of five people to take action. Whether that’s through my social media account, or doing a key note or one of my stylists or business owners I’m mentoring. By inspiring others to action it has more of a ripple effect so that’s what I live by.”

And we’re sure she’ll be inspiring a lot more than two people during this two-day course.

The workshop led by Kelly Lundberg will take place on may 3rd and 4th, 2019

Founder and Executive Chairman of ClassPass Payal Kadakia Talks to a&e About Expanding into the Middle East

After a successful launch in Dubai in late 2018, New York-born fitness app ClassPass has just expanded out into Abu Dhabi.  As the new approach to working out makes waves in the Middle East, a&e catches up with the Founder, Payal Kadakia.

When Payal Kadakia spent hours browsing the net just to find one ballet class near her, she realised there must be a simpler way to find out what happening around you in the realm of fitness.

Hence why ClassPass was born – an app that allows you to search and book a wide range of fitness classes using credits accrued from a monthly membership fee –  in 2011. And now in 2019, Payal Kadakia’s business venture has expanded to 2,500 cities worldwide.

Most recently, ClassPass has launched in Abu Dhabi. Catching up with Payal as her brand expands into the Middle East, the entrepreneur shares her career path to date, why she’s chosen this region to conquer next and her own fitness regime.

a&e Interviews ClassPass Founder, Payal Kadakia

From New York to Abu Dhabi, Payal Kadakia talks expanding ClassPass into the Middle East

From New York to Abu Dhabi, Payal Kadakia talks expanding ClassPass into the Middle East

Where did the idea of ClassPass come from?

I’ve been a dancer since the age of three. Dancing is my passion, an integral part of my identity. After college, when working in traditional jobs, I found it difficult to do my job well and also find time for dance. Then, in the summer of 2010, I visited San Francisco and met incredible entrepreneurs. I hadn’t previously considered the possibility of entrepreneurship, but meeting them made me realize that if I didn’t like my reality, I had the power within me to change it.

Thirty-six hours later, I went online to sign myself up for a ballet class to take after work.  It took me hours to browse through different websites as I struggled to find the information I needed. Pursuing one’s passion shouldn’t be this hard. I realized that this was my mission: to make it easy for people to connect seamlessly with the experiences they love.

Talk us through your career to date

I graduated from MIT with a degree in Operations Research and Economics. Prior to starting at ClassPass in 2011, I worked as a consultant at Bain & Company and at the Warner Music Group. I left my job at Warner to start ClassPass.

How did your childhood love for dance influence your career path?

Dance is my passion. It fuels my creative energies and adds colour and meaning to my life. It was my passion for dance that led me to create ClassPass. We strive to help people keep their passions alive or discover new ones altogether – all with the simplicity of an app.

Why do you think ClassPass thrives in today’s times?

People are busy, but they still want to be active. ClassPass makes it easy for people to find exciting fitness opportunities anywhere they are, any time they can create them. Through our app, we make it easier for people to make time to care for themselves. It’s only when we’re able to carve out time for ourselves that we’re fully able to help others.

First Dubai, and now ClassPass has launched in Abu Dhabi

First Dubai, and now ClassPass has launched in Abu Dhabi

What is the philosophy of ClassPass?

Our mission is to motivate people to live inspired lives every day by introducing and seamlessly connecting them to soul-nurturing experiences. We strive to help every life be fully lived.

What does your exercise routine look like?

I travel all the time, and each day is different from the next. What’s consistent is that I find time to exercise every day, thanks to ClassPass. I always plan out my first choice class with second and third choice classes also lined up just in case I’m unable to make it to my first choice. I also dance nearly every evening.

Why has it been important to expand out to the Middle East?

We are now working with more than 15,000 plus fitness and studio partners in 2500 cities around the world.  I’m convinced we are arriving in the Middle East at exactly the right time. The UAE is home to a diverse array of studios that are amplifying a universal fitness culture. We’re seeing increased adoption of fitness routines across the region, and we’re thrilled to be bringing our market-leading offering to this region.

Why are the audience in Dubai and Abu Dhabi different from elsewhere in the world?

We launched first in Dubai, a fast-paced, health-conscious city. Six months later we expanded to Abu Dhabi. In Dubai, the adoption of boutique fitness has been incredibly fast, particularly over the past 2 to 3 years. New studios seem to pop up every week! In Abu Dhabi, the adoption has been a little slower because the boutique fitness culture is just blooming. This is exciting for us, as it enables us to directly impact the growth of the fitness ecosystem!

It’s to see great new concepts like PUNCH, Sweat, Energy Plus and Flo in the city’s capital along with other favourites, such as Fitness First and The Room! The UAE is home to multiple nationalities, so users can also take advantage of the international membership concept and use the app all over the world.

What do you still want to achieve?

I’m so excited about our continuing international and domestic expansion. We want everyone — regardless of where they live — to connect with soul-nurturing experiences. You’ll also see us continue to bring exciting new gyms and studios to the platform to help members support their physical and mental wellbeing anytime, anywhere.

ClassPass started in New York in 2013

ClassPass started in New York in 2011

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome?

When I started ClassPass, I was obsessed with our mission. I knew it was too powerful to fail. It took a lot of hard work and persistence to finally develop the right product to unleash our potential to enrich lives and get people moving.

And your biggest achievement?

Members have booked 65 million class reservations through our platform. That’s 65 million hours of people’s lives we’ve helped enrich. That number is humbling and inspiring. Each reservation is as exciting as the first, and each inspires me to work even harder to do more for our members.

How do you keep your team motivated through tough times?

I believe it’s important to lead through inspiration and positive motivation. Even when there are setbacks, when people believe in your mission, they’ll work with you to make it a reality.

What would you tell your younger self?

I would say the same thing that I say to anyone – to not be afraid, to follow and maintain your passions and to believe in yourself.

Co-Founder of That Hair Tho Kate Darling Talks Bringing Sustainable Hair Care to the UAE

Kate Darling, the Co-Founder of That Hair Tho in JLT, talks to a&e about her goals in sustainable beauty over Morning Coffee.

After a decade working in the beauty industry, Kate Darling has taken a new step by opening That Hair Tho – or THT – in Dubai in early 2019.

The project had been a year in the making, while Kate’s passion for cruelty-free and sustainable beauty has been resident for much longer.

Talking to a&e over Morning Coffee, the Co-Founder talks us through her early love of beauty, and her plans within the industry going forward.

Watch the full interview with Kate above, and find out what we learned talking with her below.

Five Things We Learned Talking to Kate Darling Over Morning Coffee

THT has opened in JLT

THT has opened in JLT

Her love for beauty started young

Kate tells us that she remembers being fascinated by and experimenting with beauty from a young age. She said that from the age of 11 she was discovering makeup, and added: “I would spend hours every night putting on different looks and experimenting with eyeliner and soon became passionate about it.”

Kate’s thoughts on ethical beauty

The Co-Founder of the salon reveals that using and promoting products that are both ethical and sustainable has been a priority for her. She said: “The concept of the salon is using ethical and sustainable brands… They’re also vegan and cruelty-free free. So that’s quite important for us that were supporting those brands here and preventing the industry using cruelty to animals which is completely unnecessary.” And talking about what excites the entrepreneur about the industry in the region right now, she said: “It would have to be that consumers are becoming more aware of the products they are using and the ingredients inside.  And I think it’s become more important for consumers to understand their products are ethically sourced sand they won’t damage the environment.”

The advice Kate would give her younger self…

“Mistakes are okay and not everything is going to go your way. Making mistakes – with businesses or  whatever –  has been the fastest way to grow as a businesswoman and a person.”

Sophia Hilton inspires her the most

The London-based owner of Not Another Salon and Not Another Academy inspired the Dubai-based entrepreneur. Kate told a&e: “Not only has she got her own salon but she has an academy and her own social media company now. But the thing that inspires me about her most is her honesty, spreading the truth about the business. She’s not afraid to be herself while promoting her business as well.”

Kate’s business motto…

“If you can’t change it, don’t worry about it. It helped me a lot to think you can’t stress about things out of your control. You have to let it go and be positive about the future and what you can change.”

Mandana Shabani, Founder and Chef at Brambles, On Creating Community-Based Dining

Brambles Founder and Chef, Mandana Shabani, joins the a&e team for Morning Coffee as she discusses how the Barsha Heights-based wholefoods cafe came to be.

Since arriving in Dubai five years ago, the California-raised chef has been working on closing a gap she saw in the dining market.

Mandana Shabani did so by creating a cafe that focused on boasting a welcoming community as much as it did on presenting fresh and wholesome foods. Rather than dining at the restaurant of a world-famous chef, you could walk in the door and meet the culinary creative who put their heart and soul into the menu they place before you.

Talking to a&e over Morning Coffee, the Founder of Brambles – the wholefoods cafe in Barsha Heights known for its kale brownies and avocado pizza – explained how resisting investment and fast growth in exchange of staying true to her own ethos has been one of her proudest achievements with the eatery to date.

Watch the full video with the chef above, and find out what we found out chatting with her below.

Five Things We Learnt Talking To Mandana Shabani Over Morning Coffee

Brambles cafe in Barsha Heights, Dubai

Brambles cafe in Barsha Heights, Dubai

Inspiration as a chef

Mandana told us: “One of the biggest inspirations as a chef comes from being exposed to different cultures, ethnics foods and spices and always being able to balance them out with vegetables and lighten them up.”

Community is key

She said: “One of the most exciting things – after California I moved to New York – and I was lucky to live in two different cities that were so neighbourhood and community based, and has such as thriving and unique concepts by people who were actually chefs. I think coming to Dubai, one of the things I’ve noticed in the last few years is there are now more of these homegrown concepts popping up and they are very chef-centric. You walk into them and meet the guys that put the menu together, who put his heart and soul into it. So it’s exciting to get some heart and soul back.”

Mandana’s best meal ever is…

She explained that her final meal would be Thanksgiving dinner. She adds not just for the food, but for the concept of spending the day eating and celebrating with family.

On her motto in life

When speaking about her motto in life, the chef told us: “If every day you look in the mirror and you can look yourself in the eyes, then you’ve had a good day. We have only ourselves to answer to. So be kind, be nice, and live with integrity when no one’s watching because you have to live with yourself.

What she says ‘no’ to…

“I think just injustice. I have pretty zero-tolerance for anyone being unnecessarily rude, especially with people I care about from my friends to my staff. That’s my one thing, the one thing I can’t be okay with.”

The Aigner SS19 Bags Inspired by Dada Art Movement We’re Lusting Over Right Now

As another season rolls around, we’re working on refreshing our accessories as much as our wardrobes. And what we love more than a luxe new leather bag to see us through the summer, is a luxe new leather bag with an intriguing story.

Which is why we’re lusting over the new collection from Aigner this month. For its Spring/Summer 2019 collection, the Munich-born fashion house took inspiration from the Dada art movement of the early twentieth century.

The literary and art movement born in Zurich but spreading to neighbouring European countries was characterised by a mockery and rebellion against both materialism and nationalism as they grew and united. The movement was anti-war and anti-bourgeois in nature.

And now Aigner has taken inspiration from the movement for its latest collection by rebelling against convention, the results being clean-cut designs, notice-me shades and bold colour blocking.

See the pieces we’re lusting over from the new collection.

The Managing Director of ALF Administration, Omaira Farooq Al Olama, on the Comment That Changed Her Career Path

The Managing Director of ALF Administration, Omaira Farooq Al Olama,  discusses the moment she decided to change her entire career path in order to help children across the UAE.

After studying criminology,  Omaira Farooq Al Olama initially began her career working within that field.  But when someone in her workforce told her that as a woman she wasn’t capable of answering a simple question and she should wait to be asked to talk, she made a change to stop this happening to anyone else.

The entrepreneur went on to set up ALF Administration to teach children – boys and girls – that nobody should tell them not to speak up. Her work now aims to instil more confidence and leadership skills in the youth around the UAE.

Haysam’s advice for aspiring entrepreneurs

He said, when speaking to those wanting to launch their own business, he would tell them: “To learn when to say ‘no’.” He elaborated: “I mean in this chaotic world it’s pretty tempting to develop a way of saying no to certain things and obviously differentiating between grabbing the right opportunities and letting go on different occasion.”

The meaning of travelling

The business owner said: “Travelling enriches my soul, so I can say it connects me with other people and different cultures. I believe there are always opportunities to learn something.”

His life mottos

Haysam shared both his personal and professional motto with a&e. The latter is: “Be accountable for your actions and be responsible – it’s only you who is responsible for your actions.”

Haysam’s dad is his biggest inspiration

The Eid hairdressing talent didn’t begin with him. Haysam’s dad, Younes Eid is the owner of Salon Younes Eid in Beirut, Lebanon. Of him, the entrepreneur said: “First and foremost must be my father who inspires me. It probably sounds like a cliché but honestly, he does. He started his journey from nothing and he built it up to the top… You know the achievement he made in his career and his determination, it’s thanks to him I’m doing what I’m doing to today… He’s been a real example to me.”

What he would tell himself in 10 years

“I’d like to think that I’m proud I followed my gut, I so much believe in gut feeling and… when it comes to decision making, I follow my guts and I’d like to be proud of that in 10 years time with no regrets.”

Founder of Neom Organics Reveals The Best Essential Oils To Lift Your Mood

From burning a scented candle to adding a few drops into to your bath water, Neom Organics Founder Nicola Elliott reveals exactly how essential oils can be good for your wellbeing.

In a high-tempo world where we barely have time to sleep, taking time out for some true r&r can be a challenge. But when your days are busy and your diary is hectic, a quick way to seek some zen is lighting a relaxing candle and taking an oil-infused hot bath.

Nicola Elliott, the Founder of Neom Organics – an organic and ethically-sourced home fragrance and aromatherapy brand with benefits for the mind and body  – explained exactly why and how using essential-oil enriched products can help the body and spirit.

She explained: “An essential oil is a complex compound of chemical constituents taken from a single plant source that is volatile, so it evaporates easily and hits your limbic system which is your ’emotional’ brain – this makes essential oils so powerful as they work both on an emotional and physical level.”

And helping even further, the trained aromatherapist and nutritionist broked down to a&e which oils can actually help ease which negative mood…

To feel uplifted

From circumstantial to hormonal, we all have days when we need something little to boost our mood and help us conquer the tasks ahead. And Nicola has a trio of essential oils she recommends for such an occasion. She said: “I would recommend Bergamot for low mood as this essential oil is known for its uplifting properties and can help balance hormones.” Elsewhere, scents of wild mind and mandarin she described as “energising and uplifting” help to boost immunity and improve circulation.

To ease anxiety

Anxiety is the epidemic of the modern age, and it affects people in a whole host of ways. From chronic anxiety that persists day to day, to certain situations and triggers our particular anxieties. When you’ve had one of those days, the Founder suggest reaching for the lavender.  “It is naturally soothing and calming for your body, mind and wellbeing. Cedarwood is also very relaxing and thought to allow the brain to unwind,” she details.

To reduce restlessness

It could be those evenings when you just can put the day away and fall off to sleep, or those days when you just feel restless when all you really need is a time out.  Nicola recommends: “Ylang Ylang is very calming and is helps to aid sleep – it is also a good alternative for those who don’t like the smell of Lavender. Patchouli also helps to aid a better night’s sleep, it can help with restlessness and it’s widely known for being one of the most versatile essential oils.”

Neom Organic products are available in-store at Harvey Nichols and Bloomingdale and online at Ounass.ae.

Award-Winning Author Jessica Jarlvi Reveals How To Conquer Writers’ Block

Author of When I Wake Up and What Did I Do?, Jessica Jarlvi talks through her writing process and her attitude towards writers’ block with a&e over Morning Coffee.

After careers in publishing, marketing and PR, writer Jessica Jarlvi finally had the idea (and maybe the time) to sit down and pen her first novel just a few years ago.

And it seems like the timing was just right for the Sweden-born mother of four to put pen to paper, as she went on to win Fiction Book of the Year by Magrudy’s in 2016.

In 2018, the suspense fiction writer – who admires the works of Stephen King and Margaret Atwood – published her second page-turning novel.

Catching up with the a&e team over Morning Cofee, the Dubai resident talked us through everything from the autobiography that she’s reading right now to her project as an eight-year-old that led her on the path to being a writer.

Watch the full Morning Coffee interview with the Magrudy winner above, and read what we learned chatting with her below.

Jessica Jarlvi talks through her writing routine

Inspiration comes from anywhere

When talking about her writing process and where she finds ideas for her stories, Jessica told us: “It can be a conversation I have with somebody, it could be an article I’ve read or a place I’ve visited… It’s one little thing that sets me off and lots of things can happen along the way.”

On writers’ block

The author revealed she doesn’t really believe in ‘writers’ block’ and offered up ways to keep the words flowing why it seems inspiration is lost. She said: “I would have to say that I don’t really believe in writers’ block. I think you can get stuck in your novels, but I don’t think you necessarily get stuck writing, because you can write something different. If you’re writing a novel, start somewhere else or just journal about your day. The words can always come from somewhere.”

Staying motivated is the challenge

The award-winning writer told us that, in her career, the biggest thing she’d had to overcome is people not taking her seriously before all her success. She elaborated: “When people ask you what you do and you say you’re a writer, the first question is always ‘are you published?’ But when you’re not you feel like people don’t take it seriously, so you’ve to take it seriously yourself. So that’s the biggest challenge to stay motivated and to stay on track.”

The book she’s reading is…

Becoming by Michelle Obama. On it, she said: “It’s a really interesting autobiography and I highly recommend it.”

Jessica says ‘no’ to negative people

She explained: “I say no to people who have an overly negative attitude to life. Because I feel in the end they harm themselves and generally people around them. I like positive people.”

Notre Dame De Paris Fire: Inside the Cultural and Historical Significance of the French Cathedral

After the cathedral in the French capital was engulfed on April 15th 2019, we look back on why the Notre Dame’s flames shook the world.

When one of the world’s most famous buildings set alight, people all over the world showed both their personal sadness over the loss and stood in solidarity with the French people as they grieved. But why exactly is the building so beloved, and why is it’s burning such a tragedy? Here’s a brief insight into the cultural and historical significance of the landmark.

Striking and Iconic Architecture

You don’t need to be a specialist within the field of architecture to know that the Notre Dame is something of a marvel. The construction for the world-famous cathedral began in 1163, during the reign of King Louis VII. It took nearly two centuries for it to be finalised, finally being completed in 1345. It’s located on a small island named Île de la Cité which is located on the Seine river. The building – the name of which translates to Our lady of Paris – is one of the most significant examples of French Gothic architecture. The building is famed for its innovative use the rib vault and flying buttress, sizable and colourful windows, sculptural decoration, its 8,000-pipe organ and of course the sheer size and beauty.

Historical Artifacts and Religious Relics

Of course, such a long-standing place of worship would contain many aged artefacts and religious relics. As of yet, the fate of many items are still not known. On some of the relics, France’s Culture Minister reported to a radio station: “Notre Dame’s treasury, which included, for example, the crown of thorns and the tunic of Saint Louis, is safe in Paris City Hall.” The famous organ is said to be badly affected, while other yet un-named artworks and relics have been destroyed. Many of the stunning stain glass windows dating back to the 1200s were melted in the blaze, but others are thankfully still intact.

Moments in History

As well as featuring as the backdrop to many scenes in films and books in the French capital– most obviously Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel Notre-Dame de Paris, as adapted to The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Disney for film – many real-life significant events have taken place within the Parisian cathedral. In 1429, it was the scene of a coronation for King Henrey VI as King Of France. The ten-year-old had only been crowned the King Of England two years previous. In the church, weddings of James V of Scotland and Madeleine of Valois took place there in 1537 while Mary, Queen of Scots married Dauphin Francis in the religious grounds in 1558.

Jensen Matthews PR Founder, Loredana Matei, on How Failure Inspires Her

Loredana Matei, the Founder of Jensen Matthews PR, talks to A&E over Morning Coffee about how creating her own career path inspired by failure.

After starting her own PR agency in 2016, Loredana Matei found herself being awarded The New Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2018.

Now another year on, it seems like she has no plans of slowing down, as failures only inspire her to work harder.

She wakes up at 3am every day

While we might have thought that waking up at 5 or 6am was intense – as so many of our Morning Coffee guests do – 3am is a whole new ballgame. But Loredana revealed she’s been sticking to the early wake-up call since starting her own business.

Not only big companies need PRs

The PR group founder said: “Usually we have this tale going around in the industry that… You’re using a PR agency only for a big company with a huge budget in place, but this is not really true. Any entrepreneur can use PR to actually tell their stories and get out there.”

Create a clear vision

When it comes to what you want to do, the Loredana advised: “I believe the visions that I have for the future… It’s been a rollercoaster, but if you create a very clear vision of what you want to do, you’re going to stay focused on the situation.”

Failure inspires her

“Failure is the biggest inspiration behind everything I do,” the award-winner proclaimed. She said: “I have been an entrepreneur before, I started very early… [later] I tried to be an employee and have a job but I always got fired after three months, I couldn’t hold down a job. So in 2016 I just decided I need to create my own path.”

There’s beauty in simplicity

When asked who inspired her the most, one of the people Loredana listed was her Creative Director, Ryan. She said: “He is a very creative human being but at the same time, he is very grounded. He is teaching me every day how to see the beauty in the simplicity of things. And this is very important I guess. We live in Dubai and it’s such a rush of the biggest the highest the glitzy and the glam, and in order to stay true to yourself you need to be able to find beauty in simplicity, and Ryan has been a great inspiration to me.”

Is This the Healthiest Diet in the World? Here’s What Science Says

The scientific research pointing towards the Mediterranean diet being one of the healthiest around the world is only piling up.

As many diet fads come and go, there’s one diet that’s been a staple among a large group of people for decades, if not centuries. And luckily for those searching for the secret to sustaining a healthy lifestyle, you’ll be happy to know that this eating regime doesn’t involve exiling one food group completely or taking your eating habits to new extremes.

According to study after study, it appears the Meditteranean diet is proving itself as a worthy contender for helping us to lead long and healthy lives.

In an age where diets – for weight control to environmental reasons – range from extremes such veganism to keto diets, it’s interesting to see a more ‘balanced’ offering take a seat at the top table.

As another research project shines a line on its benefits, here’s just a few of the highlights.

food trends 2019

Studies have looked into the health benefits of different diets

Exercise Aid

A research project conducted by Saint Louis University and released in March 2019 has shown that a Mediterranean diet – which largely consists of whole fruits and vegetables, nuts, olive oil and whole grains, and limited red and processed meats, dairy, trans and saturated fats and refined sugars – can improve athletes’ endurance exercise performance.

In fact, after just four days, runners eating such a diet overall typical Western diet – consisting of a low intake of fruit, vegetables and unrefined or minimally processed oils and high intakes of trans and saturated fats, dairy, refined sugars, refined and highly processed vegetable oils, sodium and processed foods – ran six per cent faster over a 5k race. Researchers found no difference between the two diets in performance in anaerobic exercise tests.

Brain Power

In 2017, the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society published a report proclaiming that eating foods that are generally included in such a diet, is linked to a lower risk for memory struggles in older age. The analysis was found after researchers studied both the diets and cognitive abilities – such as memory and attention skills – on near to 6,00 older adults.

A study published in Neurology claimed that older people who generally stuck to a Mediterranean diet retained more brain volume over a three-year period than those who did not follow the diet as closely. The conclusion was attained after researchers recorded the eating habits of over 900 Scottish people in their seventies who didn’t have dementia. Of those, 562 underwent brain scans to compare the results.

Study author Michelle Luciano said: “As we age, the brain shrinks and we lose brain cells which can affect learning and memory… This study adds to the body of evidence that suggests the Mediterranean diet has a positive impact on brain health.”

Bone Strength

In 2018, researchers at the University of East Anglia in the UK wrote a paper on their findings when studying the diet. They found this nutrient-rich diet could reduce bone loss in osteoporosis. The trial looked at over 1,000 participants between the age of 65 and 79 took part in the trial, and it concluded that after 12 months, bone density increased in those

More than 1,000 people aged between 65 and 79 took part in the trial, and volunteers were randomised into two groups — one which followed a Mediterranean diet and a control group which did not. Bone density was measured at the start and after 12 months.
