What is Sustainability? Breaking Down the Movement

As it becomes more and more of a buzzword, we break down what living sustainably really means.

By the summer of 2019, we all know we should be living a more sustainable lifestyle. We’re opting for brands with recyclable packaging as we shop, we’re switching out our single-use plastic bottles for chic metal alternatives and some of us are even ordering the vegetarian option instead of its carnivores alternative once a week. But sustainability is – while the former shouldn’t be underestimated – more than just buying into different products that might sit a little lighter on our conscience. What are these consumer choices really contributing too?

At its very core, sustainability means being able to remain or be maintained at a certain level. The scales of what’s coming in and what’s going out need to be balanced, in other words. If we ran a marathon without having fueled our bodies with food and water beforehand, trying to burn energy by running a race would be unsustainable, for example. The results could, in fact, be catastrophic.

Living more sustainable needs to be a global concern

Living more sustainable needs to be a global concern

And the same applies to the planet. When it comes to the environment, we as humans are using resources at a much quicker rate than we’re renewing or replacing them. Worse still, many of these energy sources and materials are not replaceable at all. To add insult to injury, these practises are often harmful beyond repair to the planet and its atmosphere.

Let’s look at plastic, for example. Not only are many plastic items only used once, but it’s a non-biodegradable material. Meaning single-use plastic bottles last for years in the environment, realising harmful toxins within that time and causing damage to the wildlife.

A vegetarian lifestyle contributes to a more sustainable planet

A vegetarian lifestyle contributes to a more sustainable planet

Elsewhere, many countries contribute massively to food waste. Not only is this upsetting in the most basic consideration that food hasn’t gone to use when so many people are starving, but it’s also a waste of the water used to grow that food, the fossil fuels burnt to transport it, and the energy used to keep food items fresh. Making sustainable choices, therefore, would reduce this level of output and ensure resources aren’t being used at a rate where they can’t be replaced.

And the same goes for our fashion and beauty industry – sustainability is about making smarter choices with materials and manufacturing methods to feed into the system as well as take from it.

Single use plastic is an example of materials that need to be minimised in everyday life

Single-use plastic is an example of materials that need to be minimised in everyday life

Of course, protecting the environment is just one strand of sustainability. There’s also economically and social sustainability. The former works on preserving capital over a period of time while the latter refers to maintaining the peace and order of humanity.

But back to the top, the easiest way we as individuals can contribute to environmental sustainability is via the products we buy and the decisions we make. From opting to invest in forward-thinking fashion brands that consider their carbon footprint to cutting out meat from our diets – animal agriculture is responsible for more greenhouse gases than all the world’s transportation systems combined – these seemingly small decisions can have a big impact. Or if you’re in the position to make big decisions, that could mean running an energy-efficient office or investing in initiatives that give back in the areas your company might take from.

So what does a sustainable world look like? It’s a world where we only chop down as many trees as we grow per year, and homes and buildings are intelligently designed to be energy efficient. It’s a world where the burning of atmosphere-destroying fossil fuels is minimal and where recyclable materials are favoured while others are significantly reduced or eliminated.

Fasting and Fitness Diary: Sonja Moses Reveals How Her Appetite and Routine Has Changed Two Weeks In

At the halfway point, Fitness Expert Sonja Moses shares her experience of fasting throughout Ramadan for the first time. This week, Barry’s Bootcamp ME Director of Performance talks how she’s adapted her fitness routine and diet so far and dealing with teaching classes as it’s time to break fast.

Talking through her experience of fasting for the first time along with her high pace career in the fitness industry – Sonja Moses is Barry’s Bootcamp ME’s Director of Performance, a Muay Thai Boxer, the Creator of HIITBOX and a Spiritual Sports Coach –  the Dubai resident shares her experiences, struggles and lessons learnt week-on-week.

And for week two, she discusses how her routine has changed so far and what she has learnt while observing Iftar.

Week Two: Sonja Moses’s Fasting and Fitness Diary

Sonja Moses shares her routine throughout Ramadan

I have the utmost respect for those who fast for Ramadan every year. It really is not easy!

My mindset has to be really strong as I repeatedly remind myself of the why behind me doing this whilst fighting hunger pains. I am carefully monitoring changes in my appetite and fitness levels and where my fitness level is still the same, I have started to crave sugar and get really fatigued around 3pm.

I found it easier to get into a routine this week as I knew I was going to get hungry at certain times and that I preferred to train at different times of the day depending on my schedule. My routine for most days looks something like this:

4.00am: Wake up, drink 500ml to 1 litre of water, eat plain yoghurt, oats, banana, almond butter

8.00am: Wake up and either run or skip on the balls of my feet for 10 to 15 mins, do morning bodyweight training ritual

09.30: Teach at Barrys DXB

11.00: Work with clients

19.00: Teach at Barrys DXB (Drink protein shake whilst teaching)

20.00: Iftar – carbs, protein, veggies, fruits

22.00: Teach at Barrys DXB

23.00: Eat protein, veggies and fruits.

If possible, I am having a sleep around 3 or 4pm if at home, but if I’m out and about, working mobile, or on my laptop in meetings it won’t always happen. Then the day is savage!

However, I have a confession… I did break fast on one day. I did a pads session with my coach and went into sparring with my team straight after in the middle of the day and had to drink water. Wasn’t prepared for that one…

After talking to and observing my clients’ habits, it is really clear that what works for one person does not work for another and you really have to listen to your body. I also discovered that most Muslims who are fasting will sleep late or for most of the day (if they can) and make the night into the day.

I must admit that I really have to dig deep when I am teaching just before Iftar in the evening, which is most days to keep my energy levels up. The first week Iftar would fall just before my 7pm class so I could replenish but now it is after which makes it challenging. But come 7.50pm, I can sip on a protein shake after eating my two dates, which is traditional to eat after a day of fasting to regulate sugar levels.

Iftar is the breaking of fast at sunset. Traditionally it is for families and local communities to spend time together to celebrate this daily event whilst reflecting on the importance of community. Commonly after Iftar, Muslims keep eating and drinking until Suhoor at sunrise, hence why they turn their day into night.

I have been to a few Iftars now and from what I have experienced, it is a full-on feast. It is recommended to eat light with an emphasis on fibre, protein and complex carb. But as I’ve witnessed, this does not always happen!

Sonja Moses, Barry’s Bootcamp ME Director of Performance, gives her tips for staying fit while fasting

Sonja Moses, Barry’s Bootcamp ME Director of Performance talks through her own experience of fasting

I think it is really important after what I have observed and experienced that I reinforce the importance of drinking water to hydrate the body before stuffing huge amounts of food into it! We all know when we are tired that we crave sugar as our blood sugar levels are low. This is why it is so important to hydrate and eat correctly after a long period of fasting with complex carbs/ proteins/ fats rather than reaching for the nearest cookie jar and fizzy sugary drinks.

All of this said, I love Iftar culture and it has definitely reminded me of the most important things in life, family and friends.

Still missing coffee…

Here’s How to Match Your Foundation Shade Perfectly According to Hourglass Makeup Artist

Getting the just-right shade of foundation to match your skin tone can be tricky. Learn once and for all how to get it right thanks to Chi Shevket, Hourglass Cosmetics’s Senior Regional Makeup Artist and Trainer for the Middle East.

When it comes to beauty shopping, one of the most frustrating experiences can be deliberating over a fitting foundation in the store, finally handing over the Dirhams only to arrive home and realise the shade doesn’t quite match your skin.

But when we spoke to Hourglass Cosmetic’s Chi Shevket as she introduced us to the new Hourglass Vanish Stick Foundation and Liquid Foundation, she broked down everything – from the common mistake people make to the where to test it and adapting to different seasons– you need to know about avoiding that dreaded contrasting jawline.

What are some of the things people get wrong when finding the right foundation?

1. Choosing a darker shade than their own skin tone

2. Not understanding their skin undertone

3. Matching shades in the wrong area

4. Guessing the foundation shade without actually trying it on the skin

5. Assuming that all brands have the same shade of foundation

Vanish Seamless Foundation Stick

Vanish Seamless Foundation Stick

What is the best way to test the foundation on the skin?

People often try to match their foundation on the back of their hand where they could have suntan on or be exposed to the sun.

The best way to test your foundation is along the side of your cheek and down to the centre of the neck, and then blend the colour into the skin. If the colour blends straight into the neck that means it’s your correct shade of foundation.

How do you figure out which undertones you have?

Finding your undertone is really not easy. If you have cool undertones, your skin tone usually has hints of blue and pink.  If you have warm undertones, you have hints of yellow, peach or gold. Finally, if you seem to have a mixture of both, you have neutral undertones.

If you aren’t sure which undertone you have, you can start by looking at the veins on your wrists. If your veins appear blue or purple, it means you are a cool tone, if green or olive, you are a warm tone. If you are mix than you are a natural tone.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer

Can some foundations shades change as you actually wear them?

Yes, they can. Some foundations can oxidise, which means the foundation may change shades with contact with oxygen in the air, however, the Hourglass formulations ensure this never happens.

How do you get the most from your foundation?

I would say that you need to always use good skincare, sunscreen, a primer such as Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer and a setting powder, without talc (which can flake in hot weather conditions).

The Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder is talc-free and contains diamond powder which will leave your skin looking fresh all day. Your foundation choice may change with the seasons too. For example, during the hot months of summer, it may feel more comfortable to use a skin tint, such as Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint. The Hyaluronic Acid will keep your skin hydrated whilst not clogging up your pores.

Hourglass Illusion

What other products can help you get the most from your foundation?

Always prep your skin with a good skincare routine, and follow with a primer such as the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer. Choose your foundation and start from the nose. Using a brush or sponge, such as the Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Brush, blend the foundation out towards the cheek and upwards towards the forehead. Add a little life using a natural colour bronzer – apply a light dusting over the face then contour the cheeks using a darker bronzer or by using more product, if required. A blush will add a pop of colour, too. Then to set your look, us a good quality setting powder such as Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder.

What You Need to Know About World Environment Day 2019

As World Environment Day approaches on June 5th, here’s what you need to know about the theme and location for 2019.

Since 1974, people have been coming together across the globe on an annual occasion in a bid to raise awareness for ways of living and working that might just help save the planet. But the concept of World Environment Day as it’s now called – or WED – began two years previous in 1972 when the UN General Assembly met in Stockholm, Sweden, for a conference on the environment and how humans interact with it.  This lead to the first WED, the theme of which was ‘Only One Earth’.

Over the years, the awareness day has looked into topics such as reducing food waste, urging communities to recycle plastic, targeting deforestation and more. And since 1987, the idea was born than each year a different location would be the centre for all the activities.

And now 47 years later, the calendar event is as important (if not more so) than ever before. As World Environment Day comes around this June, here’s what you need to know for 2019.

For 2019, World Environment Day will tackle the issue of air pollution

For 2019, World Environment Day will tackle the issue of air pollution

Theme for World Environment Day 2019

When it’s estimated that 92 per cent of people worldwide do not breathe clean air and that air pollution costs the global economy a mind-boggling $5 trillion every year in health and welfare costs, you know it’s high time to focus on tackling air pollution. Worse still, it is predicted that by 2030, ground-level ozone pollution is expected to reduce staple crop yields by 26 per cent.

What many people might not realise is that the problem is more than just the fumes from motors and factories clogging up the atmosphere. In fact, so many industries contribute to increasing air pollution in many ways. Agriculture, for example, is a major player thanks to the sheer amount of livestock that produces methane and ammonia, while household and industrial waste – generated by anything from indoor burning of fossil fuels to coal-burning power plants – contribute too. Shockingly still in 2019, an estimated 40 per cent of waste is still thrown to the fire as a means of disposal. This practice is estimated to take place in 166 countries.

Pollution caused by transport isn’t simply driving your car from A to B, either. There’s also transportation of goods as well as an increasing number of flight paths that pile pollution into the atmosphere. In fact, global transport accounts for near one-quarter of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions right now, and the number is only rising.

Claire Holman, Chartered Environmentalist and Chair of the Institute of Air Quality Management, has highlighted exactly why it’s so important: “Air pollution is a global public health crisis causing unnecessary early mortality and ill health at a huge economic cost to society. It also impacts on our natural environment altering habitats. World Environment Day 2019 is a great opportunity to increase awareness of this, the world’s most pressing environmental issue of the 21st century.”

China will host the events for 2019

China will host the events for 2019

China will host World Environment Day 2019

For 2019, it will be China that will be hosting celebrations for World Environment Day. The event will aim to encourage everyone from the individual to companies and governments to explore and implement new technologies that are both green and renewable. Everyone will be encouraged to be conscious of the habits and methods they can take on board to reduce their contribution to the problem.

Joyce Msuya, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, said at the announcement: “China will be a great global host of 2019’s World Environment Day celebrations… The country has demonstrated tremendous leadership in tackling air pollution domestically. It can now help spur the world to greater action. Air pollution is a global emergency affecting everyone. China will now be leading the push and stimulating global action to save millions of lives.”

As of this year, China owns 50 per cent of electric cars in the world and 99 per cent of its electric buses, just one demonstration of its movement toward a greener, more sustainable planet.

High End Fashion Brands Making Steps Towards Sustainability

From Prada to Stella McCartney, here are some of the high-end fashion brands that are taking steps towards making the fashion industry more sustainable.

For a long time, the fashion industry came under fire by activists and environmentalists for practices that seem at best wasteful and at worst harmful. But in 2019, things are changing. More and more high-end brands are taking steps – whether small hops or giant leaps – towards becoming more sustainable.

Prada

Prada is one of the latest high-end brands that has taken on board the ethos of sustainability. In May 2019, the Italian fashion house launched its first fine jewellery collection. The first drop – which featured the likes of guitar pendants, animal dangle earrings and statement bracelets – reinvented some of the brand’s iconic symbols as well as takes on themes from newer collections. But it also ensured to create the line ethically. The debut collection was created with 18-carat gold and diamonds sourced from suppliers certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council, which works to promote responsible practices in metal and gemstone processing, from extraction to commercialisation that considers everything from labour rights to environmental impact.

This is Prada’s first high jewellery collection

Stella McCartney

The British fashion designer has long been an advocate for both vegetarian and sustainable fashion, and her website states that her fashion house operating to creating a modern and responsible business. As far as animal products go, Stella McCartney never uses leather, skin, furs or feathers in any of its clothes or accessories. The site proclaims: “By taking this stance we are proving it is possible to create beautiful, luxurious products that are better for everyone – animals, people and the environment.”

But it’s not just the animals themselves that McCartney and co are looking out for, it’s also the environment at large. For example, fabrics are sourced in a way that minimalises waste. With cashmere, for example, the new method has reduced its environmental impact by 92 per cent. More recently, Stella McCartney launched a sustainable sunglasses line by using bio-acetate made from Cellulose acetate (coming from wood) and plasticizer (derived from the esters of citric acid), which are both natural and renewable sources.

Ralph Lauren

The most recent symbol of Ralph Lauren’s commitment to sustainability came in the form of a Polo shirt made from recycled plastic bottles – about 12 bottles per shirt – that’s also dyed with a process that uses zero water. This is one step in the American fashion house’s commitment to removing 170 million plastic bottles from landfills and oceans by 2025. The new take on the iconic polo shirt, Earth Polo, was produced in partnership with First Mile – an organisation founded in 2004t with the mission to revolutionise waste and recycling for businesses to create a positive social impact. In fact, Ralph Lauren even has its own in house team dedicated to sustainability who’ve worked on previous projects such as teaming up with Rainforest Action Network. The union ensures that the fashion house does not contribute to rainforest destructions – and any human rights violations that go along with that – in the production in any of its garments.

Versace

As well as following suit when it comes to going fur free, Versace has been making a conscious effort to contribute to the wider sustainability movement, too. In 2017 the Italian fashion house announced their environmentally friendly operation changes. And for Versace, it begins with the people. They state: “A more sustainable Versace means that each employee and collaborator will be informed and empowered to be a change-maker.” And to date, they have trained hundreds of their employees on how to think and work.

As well as implementing changes to save water and energy behind the scenes, Versace also launched a boutique in London’s Sloane Square in December 2017 which was the first LEED [Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design] certified boutique in the iconic street. The same concept has applied to new stores in Miami and Munich and will also be featured in an upcoming Beijing opening. All are constructed and decorated with a conscious focus on the materials use, opting for recycled, recyclable, and responsible materials where possible. Donatella Versace said: “There’s no bigger luxury than our future. The new Versace concept is a commitment towards Versace’s sustainable legacy.”

Burberry

In September 2018, Burberry made an announcement that they will no longer destroy their luxury goods that didn’t sell throughout the season, after previously doing so in a bid to protect the brand. But with the news to ban the bonfire, the British company also revealed it will be putting a stop to using fur in their fashion designs. Overall, the 1856-founded fashion house has promised to become more aware of its social and environmental impact. Burberry’s chief executive Marco Gobbetti said at the time: “Modern luxury means being socially and environmentally responsible… This belief is core to us at Burberry and key to our long-term success. We are committed to applying the same creativity to all parts of Burberry as we do to our products.”

Simultaneously, the Burberry partnered with Elvis & Kresse, a luxury company that will help reduce waste by transforming offcuts of leather into new items rather than become waste. Burberry also established the Burberry Material Futures Research Group with the Royal College of Art to explore new sustainable material.

Maria Tash on Expanding her Jewellery Brand into the Middle East and Her Most Sentimental Item

Months after Maria Tash brings her jewellery line to the Middle East, the designer and fine jewellery retailer talks to a&e about expanding into the region, her earliest memories with jewellery, and the trend she is loving right now.

From the moment she attended a jewellery making class as a child accompanied by her mother, Maria Tash had found her passion in life.  After years of studying abroad and exploring her options, she decided 21 years ago to make it her profession, too.

In 1993, she opened her first studio in Manhattan, New York. And now all these years on, she has stores in London, Dublin, Rome and Dubai, too. Not long after opening up shop in The Dubai Mall, Maria talked us through her decision to launch in the region, and what makes it unique.

A&E Interviews Maria Tash

Maria Tash talks to A&E about opening up shop in The Dubai Mall

Maria Tash talks to A&E about opening up shop in The Dubai Mall

You launched into the Dubai Mall in December – what has the expansion into this region been like for you?

I am particularly proud of my expansion into the Middle East because we had to figure out medical licensing, as well as the training, vetting, and visas for the international staff, along with all the challenges of establishing a freestanding location. I am thrilled with the design of the store, and it is one of the most beautiful we have, worldwide. It is also one of our top performing stores and the majority of sales are from Emirati women.

Why was it important?

To have a store in such an important and international location as The Dubai Mall’s Fashion Avenue and to be alongside other luxury houses was a very important expansion in terms of brand positioning. It is important as it allows me to work with the wonderful local Emirati clients and other clients located in this important part of the world that we couldn’t easily reach before. Reaching these clients gives me the freedom to design pieces with larger stones, which I find liberating as a designer.

Moving into The Dubai Mall was the natural first step into the Middle East, as it is a hub for international travel, as well as a centre for luxury fashion. I love Dubai for modern architecture and it has such a great link between East and West.

A glimpse at the collections on display at the new store

A glimpse at the collections on display at the new store

Born in New York with stores all over the world…  What’s unique and different about the market and audience in this region?

I am thrilled to be able to design bold jewellery pieces and have an audience for my work in Dubai.  The clients in the Middle East appreciate the same pieces I wear myself – pear and marquise diamonds, charms, and groups of these stones. Clients are not afraid to go bold.

What else do you like to do when you touch down in Dubai?

When I first touch down, I like arriving at a luxury hotel to freshen up and then go for a quick swim. But I really look forward to getting to the store as soon as possible. It is very important for me to see the dynamic between the clients and staff and make sure the experience for clients is optimal. I need to spend a lot of quality time with management, and whenever I’m in town there are press appointments.  Outside of swimming and spending time at the store, I like shopping!

Tell us about how your fascination with jewellery began?

As a child, I would layer on many of my mother’s necklaces to wear simultaneously. I took an evening adult education jewellery making class with her at age nine, and we had fun and I made basic bracelets. Eventually, on my own, I would purchase silver wire and make finger rings, and then as a teenager, I crocheted a purse out of silver wire.

As I got older and was inspired by the fashion rule breaking punk and goth music scene as well as Indian jewellery, my interest in jewellery mixed with piercing and I started making single earrings and navel jewellery. Living in Manhattan and London I’ve been privileged to have access to some of the best jewellery in the world, and I’ve attended many fine jewellery conventions which had a large impact on my evolution as a designer.  Over twenty-five years later, this interest has evolved into a signature jewellery and piercing aesthetic.

What’s the most sentimental piece of jewellery you own?

There are two pieces. The first is a large yellow gold bracelet from my grandmother. She wore it all the time and I remember as a child watching her cooking and kneading dough in her kitchen. With each movement mixing ingredients, the bracelet would make noise and move around her wrist. I would admire it, play with it, and associate it with her wonderful cooking. I inherited the bracelet and I treasure it. The second piece is a large black diamond bead necklace I bought for my mother. Unfortunately, she only got to wear it once. I think of her every time I see it.

What’s a piercing trend that you love right now?

I love the hidden, non-interactive location of the high conch placement, as well as the quick healing and flattering high placed stacked first ear lobe piercing.

Get to Know PMD Beauty as the Personal Microdermabrasion Brand Launches in the Middle East

Known as the pioneers of home microdermabrasion, PMD Beauty has finally launched its line of gadgets into the Middle East. To get to know PMD a little better, we sat down with the company’s President Sam Alexander.

As research, technologies and trends develop, innovations in the beauty industry are created. And in the early 1990s, microdermabrasion facials – a minimally invasive procedure that can improve the appearance of age spots, fine lines, acne scarring and more by exfoliating away old skin cells and promoting the renewal process – were the latest dermatological innovation that everyone was either swearing by or saving for.

But when PMD Beauty invested in making this technology available for people at home, not only did it change the game when it came to this particular treatment but kickstarted a beauty gadget revolution. Since then, the American beauty brand has gone on to launch more and more innovative products such as the PMD Kiss (for a naturally fuller pout) and the PMD Clean (a smart silicone facial cleansing device), staying afloat the changing trends and technology. Meaning with the latest advances, women are taking the power to change their skin into their own hands.

But finally in 2019, the 2003-born company has made its way over to the Middle East. Sitting down President Sam Alexander – with his brother and VP of Sale Mike Alexander chiming in to offer his insight, too – here’s what we discovered about the brand.

Sam Alexander tells us what we need to know about PMD beauty as it launches in the Middle East

Sam Alexander tells us what we need to know about PMD beauty as it launches in the Middle East

Birth of PMD Beauty

Sam told us: “It was started by a group of doctors, engineers and microdermabrasion experts. They would go around and fix microdermabrasion machines. They’re big machines and the average treatment in the United States costs around $145, and you would usually get at least a series of eight to 12. They realised; ‘How can we take the same technology and make an at-home version of it?’  and got together to start working on this.”

Organic Growth

Mike and Sam both talk about how the success of the brand grew organically. Sam told us: “We had 500 devices, and we sent them out to mummy bloggers. We didn’t pay them anything, this was back before influencers were really a thing, and we kind of pioneered sending out products to these kinds of figures, because in 2010 no one was doing that.  We started seeing all these life-changing reviews being posted.

“One lady was like: ‘I’ve tried every single product out there and every time I go outside I hide behind makeup because I’ve never had the confidence. This is the first product where is actually changing my skin.’ From that we started getting a lot of posts we started to sell, it was totally an organic growth.  We didn’t start with a big budget. Everything we’ve done has been organic, and we’ve just kind of built and built upon that.”

Mike added: “We always say as employees at our business that we’re so lucky to have products that actually work, that really do help people with their confidence, so it’s a pretty cool thing. And with the microderm, that’s been a pretty huge factor –  products where women literally tell other women how effective they are without a big budget for marketing.”

PMD Personal Microderm Device

PMD Personal Microderm Device

Customer-Led Products

In a similar way,  Sam and Mike explain how the products that followed on from the original personal microdermabrasion tool have been inspired by and led by the customers themselves. When it comes to the process of creating a new product, Sam explained it really is about listening to the customer and creating what they say they want. “So an example of that is with the PMD Kiss. We had women using the PMD tool as a vacuum suction (they had taken off the abrasion tool) so they were just sitting there and popping it on their lips. We saw two or three of these videos and we would watch the comments where people said they wish there was a product like this. So that’s how the Kiss was invented.

“The same thing with PMD Clean. Everyone was like ‘Why don’t you have a cleaning device?’ so we basically set out to make the best cleaning device possible, doing a ton of surveys with our customers. ”

After talking to customers about what they like and don’t like about existing gadget cleansers, they created a product that “uses SonicGlow Technology, meaning it created 7,000 vibrations per minute to nudge the dirt out of our skin.”

Mike adds: “The silicone design is not only softer than bristles, but it’s also antibacterial so it makes it so you can leave it in the shower and use it without worrying about spreading bacteria. It’s easy to clean and it’s hypoallergenic.”

Future Of Gadgets

Sam said: “I think as the industry trends are going, women and men are more and more likely to use devices. And particularly because skincare companies out there that make pretty strong claims about what their serums and moisturisers do, and a lot of times you’re putting on products onto your skin and they’re not really being absorbed. So although a company can have science behind their skincare, they never can quite penetrate your skin and actually work. So what our devices to allow those other products to work.”

While Mike adds: “I think it’s also important to think that with technology and access to information and youtube etc., you can get educated and confidence in doing a treatment at home that you may not have done 20 years ago because that was left for the doctors. There’s a lot more of doing it yourself where you can be confident thanks to the access you have to information so the more and more people are learning about at home beauty devices.”

PMD Kiss

PMD Kiss

PMD and Sustainability

Sam explains: “I think the number one thing is that with for example the PMD Clean, you’re never replacing the heads, so if you look at some of our competitors, it sounds kind of gross but if you use it for a couple of months, it grows bacteria and it wears out. So they’re constantly needing to be replaced.”

While Mike adds: “I think that we always say to customers that you’re going to use less skincare, and it’s going to work way better. We have studies that show that the PMD takes off that top layer of dead dull skin, it allows your skincare to penetrate 20 times deeper. Supercharging your skincare plays into sustainability, too.”

Biggest Challenge?

Mike broke down for us: “The thing is, the products really work. But sometimes people just use them once a give up. We tell people we’re selling treadmills – it’s not magic, it’s science. And if you wait around on a treadmill for six, seven, eight weeks you start to see results, and it’s the same with the PMD.”

PMD  products are available at Harvey Nichols, Bloomingdales and online on boutiqaat.com and beautysolutions-me.com. For more information about PMD Beauty visit the website www.pmdbeauty.com.

Breitling Organises Beach Clean Up As It Unites with Ocean Conservancy on Limited Edition Watch

To launch the new chronograph, the watchmakers organised a beach cleanup in Bali alongside high profile surfers such as Kelly Slater, Sally Fitzgibbons, and Stephanie Gilmore.

Breitling has collaborated with Ocean Conservancy on a new project, and the watchmaker has launched 1,000 limited edition models to celebrate the union.

The Superocean Heritage Ocean Conservancy Limited Edition model – which will be engraved with the organisation’s logo on the caseback – is powered by a Breitling Caliber 13 mechanical movement, features an ultra-hard scratch- and shock-resistant unidirectional rotating bezel with a luminescent central dot at 12 o’clock. The last of which is a feature particularly handy for divers.  The dot alongside the watch design’s hour and minute hand are also distinctive thanks to a coating of Super-LumiNova which emits and eye-catching blue light.

And to celebrate the partnership between the two – which is built in part upon their shared commitment the health of the oceans and the cleanliness of the beaches – the two companies got together on May 10th 2019 to work together to clean the shores of Bali. In fact, 100 Breitling guests along with a handful of generous volunteers mustered the energy to collect hundreds of kilograms of rubbish and plastic from the coastlines.

The CEO of the 1884-founded watch company spoke about the union, and how important raising global awareness is. Georges Kern – who previously spoke to A&E about his mission for the company – said: “This cleanup initiative in Bali underscored the power of our partnership with Ocean Conservancy.
“With the launch of this first great watch, we want to add a meaningful and credible element to our partnership and its global projects. I would like to thank Ocean Conservancy, all the volunteers, and the members of the Breitling Surfers Squad for making this event such a resounding success.”

Meanwhile, Janis Searles Jones, the CEO of Ocean Conservancy, added: “We are all proud to be able to work with Breitling. The new Superocean Heritage Ocean Conservancy Limited Edition watch is stunning, and we are thrilled that this partnership contributes to our important work to keep plastic and trash out of our oceans.”

See Vacheron Constantin’s Striking Watch Collection That Embodies Ramadan Spirit

See Vacheron Constantin’s watch collections that mark the Holy Month of Ramadan perfectly.

To mark the special occasion, Swiss luxury watchmakers Vacheron Constantin has created a story about the spirit of Ramadan using three existing designs.

The deep-blue hues that are reminiscent of the dusk sky aim to remind wearers of the value of Ramadan, while elements of the cresent moon play into the models, too. Here’s what you need to know about the three designs:

Every Sun Has to Set: Fiftysix Complete Calendar

 Fiftysix Complete Calendar, Vacheron Constantin

Fiftysix Complete Calendar, Vacheron Constantin

The first design hones in on the notion of self-reflection throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan. The indigo hues mirror the shades of the Arabian sunset, the moment to reflect on a day of fasting and connect with your spiritual self. It also calls to the cresent of the moon – which obviously plays a huge role within the month, as the first glimpse of the cresent moon marks the beginning of the occasion – with the Fiftysix blue dial moon phase.

For You, A Thousand Times: Overseas Collection

After a day of fasting and thinking about your place in the world comes an evening of breaking fast with friends, families and the community around you. And this coming-together is where Vacheron, which was founded in 1755, drew its next inspiration. For this, the Swiss watchmakers called upon the explorer spirit of the Overseas collection.

Time Is Made Of Gold: Patrimony Retrograde Day-Date & Traditionnelle Moon Phase

Finally, the third in the Ramadan collection is dedicated to making time for family and using it to keep alive those family and cultural traditions that are passed on from generation to generation.  The notion is that while time rushes past us, time spent with family is the most precious of it all, just as gold is the most precious metal. With this design, tradition is passed down in the Patrimony Blue Dial Retrograde Day-Date model and Traditionnelle Moon Phase timepiece.

Wellness Wednesday: Tips for Coping with Feelings of Loneliness from LightHouse Arabia

Halfway through Mental Health Awareness month, a&e continues its Wellness Wednesday series with the LightHouse Arabia, this week tackling the topic of loneliness.

Whether causation of one’s mental health struggles or a contributor towards wider negative feelings and emotions, continued feelings of loneliness can be tough to deal with and detrimental to your overall health and wellbeing.

This week, Counselling Psychologist Christine Kritzas from The LightHouse Arabia offered her tips for dealing with moments of loneliness and turning moments alone into positive moments of self-care.

Tips For Tackling Feelings Of Loneliness

Remember feelings come and go

Your feelings are not permanent, they come and go like waves visiting the shore. Remind yourself that this feeling of loneliness is a visitor and that if you acknowledge its presence, it will subside. Become a gentle observer of your feelings. Instead of latching on to the feeling of loneliness, rather observe it from a distance and allow it to move through you.

Seek out the treasures in being alone

Spending time with yourself does not need to be a daunting experience. Get curious and creative about being in your own space. Being alone allows you to dictate the rhythm of your day (e.g. when to go to the gym, listen to music, read your book or take a nap).

Cultivating an attitude of gratitude through journaling

Journaling in the evenings can be a great way to reflect on daily experiences. Paying attention to the smaller moments which brought about feelings of connectedness in your day (e.g. making someone smile; having a stranger help carry your groceries; receiving a thoughtful text from a friend). Savouring in these basic pleasures can bring about feelings of gratitude.

Get connected

Make an intention to socialize at least once a week. Say ‘yes’ more often to opportunities to connect. Have something to look forward to by planning one fun-filled activity a week, such as meeting up with a friend for a coffee, going to watch a movie or a taking a long walk. If you live away from your loved ones, arrange a Skype date at least once a week.

Take up a hobby

Find creative ways to keep loneliness at bay. When you are engaged in enjoyable activities you are less inclined to feel lonely and bored. Arts and crafts exercises can be a fun way to spend time alone (e.g. buy an adult colouring-in book; learn how to crochet; create a collage or your very own vision board).

How Cannes Film Festival Is Making A Move Towards Gender Equality For 2019

The biggest film festival on the calendar is making bold moves towards greater gender equality in its 72nd year, from the number of female directors whose films are being broadcast to the gender split on the juries.

The countdown for the 72nd Cannes Film Festival is on as the industry event will take place in the French city between May 14th-25th.

And for the 2019 edition of the biggest film festival on the calendar, a staggering 1,845 feature films were submitted with the hope of being played across the three-day event, along with 4,240 short films, all from 39 different countries.

Remarkable as it may sound, those numbers aren’t out of the ordinary. But when it comes to the number of women making up the committees and directing the films this time around, those figures and statistics are worth talking about for 2019.

The Moves Cannes Film Festival is Making Towards Gender Equality in 2019

How the Cannes Film Festival is making steps towards gender equality for 2019

Film Directors

Setting the zeitgeist for what people will be watching, poring over and pondering over the next 12 months, the films that make it through those near-2000 entries carry extreme weight.  Hence why it’s important to represent people of different genders, socioeconomic backgrounds, race, age and so forth.

While we’re not sure of all the facts and figures as of yet, we do know that steps have been made to ensure more female film directors will showcase their work at the annual event.

In fact for the first time the Festival has “methodically counted the female directors submitting their film for selection,” it states. The results? Feature films to be apart of the event directed by a woman stand at 26 per cent, while 32 per cent of short films and 44 per cent of the school of films submitted to the Cinéfondation – the foundation that supported film projects from young talent – are female.

As for those selected, the overall representation of females is 27 per cent. The break down in each category is as follows:

The Competition: 19 per cent with four female directors

Un Certain Regard: 42 per cent with eight female directors

Special Screenings: 27 per cent with three female directors

The Short Films Competition: 42 per cent with five female directors.

More female directors than ever before have been selected to have their films broadcasts at Cannes Film Festival for 2019

Film Festival Organisers

Of the 109 people in charge of organising the iconic event in Paris, and 66 of them are women.  Once the festival commences, 46 per cent of the additional 865 staff members are women, making the overall percentage 48 per cent.

Selection Committee

For 2019, gender balance is represented among the Cannes Film Festival Selection Committee. Four women – Virginie Apiou, Stéphanie Lamome, Guillemette Odicino and Marie Sauvion – make up the eight-person strong panel.

Juries

Earlier in the year, we revealed that Lebanese Director  Nadine Labaki has made history with her appointment on the Cannes Film Festival Jury, thanks to her becoming the first Arab person to be granted the position of president of the Un Certain Regard jury at Cannes.

But how do the juries look in terms of gender quality for 2019? While the Short Films and Cinéfondation jury is made up of three males and one female, the other categories are all divided by gender equally.

This is the Jewellery Brand Everyone is Wearing At Cannes Film Festival

As the 72nd edition of Cannes Film Festival commenced, famous faces arrived at the French city ready to showcase, watch, discuss and explore the movies shortlisted for 2019.

But as well as dressing to impress for the occasion, the likes of Julianne Moore, Elle Fanning, Izabel Goulart and more made sure they focused on every little detail. And when it came to accessories, there was one jewellery name that dominated the annual occasion.

Chopard – Swiss luxury jewellery and watchmakers with a history dating back to 1860 – was also seen on Araya Hargate, Maimouno N’Diave and Lui Tao.

Ariana Grande Is Now the Face of Givenchy, and Here’s Why She Deserves the Role

After a weekend of not-so-subtle teasers, it was announced that Ariana Grande is the new face of Givenchy, and here’s why she thoroughly deserves the role.

Taking to Instagram, Givenchy teased the new face of the French Fashion house over the last few days with the using silhouettes of the woman in question. But thanks to a certain signature ponytail, it wasn’t hard to guess that pop princess Ariana Grande was set for the role.

After the not-to-subtle hints in a series of posts, the new was officially broken by the brand. Givenchy revealed the news to its millions of followers alongside the hashtag #arivenchy. The full Fall/Winter 19 campaign starring the Thank U, Next singer will launch in July of this year.

On joining the Givenchy family, the 25-year-old singer said: “I am so proud to be the new face of Givenchy. It is a House I have forever admired and to now be part of that family is such an honour. I love this clothing and the confidence and joy it brings to the people wearing it. Not only is the clothing timeless and beautiful but I’m proud to work with a brand that makes people feel celebrated for who they are, and unapologetic about whatever they want to be.”

Ariana Grande X Givenchy: Why the Pop Princess Is the Perfect Pick

Voice of a Generation

With her distinctive voice and catchy tunes, Ariana is clearly a talented singer and songstress. To date, she has earned herself over 80 awards. But she also stands up for women everywhere and jumps at the defence of other women in the industry and is a champion of feminism, making her the voice of a generation in a whole other way, too.

Record Breaker

As well as awards, the Florida-born singer has quite a few records under her belt, too. For starters, she is the most followed woman on Instagram with a staggering 154 million followers at the time of writing. She also broke Spotify’s 24-hour and weekly streaming records in early 2019 and holds the title for the most top 40 hits at once for a female artist. With the release of her Thank U, Next album, she became the first artist to occupy the number one, two and three positions on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart all at once since The Beatles back in 1964. We could go on, but we’re sure you get the picture.

Strong Woman

Talented yes, but there a plenty of other demonstrations of the artists’ strength and compassion. After a bomb was detonated during her concert in UK city Manchester –  tragically killing 22 of her fans – she organised a concerted there for the following month, One Love Manchester in June 2017. The event raised approximately £18 million (85 Million Dhs) for those affected by the tragedy. This is just one of the examples of overcoming hardships thrown her way that proves she’s more than just a strong set of lungs.

Instinctive style

Of course, Givenchy also picked out the singer for her own sense of style. As well as her enviable signature ponytail, she flirts between classic and edgy styles on the red carpet, making her someone fashion followers always keep an eye on. Meaning we’re counting down until the new Givenchy collection in unveiled this July.

Nadine Labaki Stuns in Dior at Cannes Film Festival 2019 and She’s Not the Only One

Fresh from throwing the grandeur Tiepolo Ball in Venice, Dior made another statement by dressing some of the biggest stars of the event for the red carpet. One of the most striking looks of the first day came from Nadine, who was taking up her position as the president of the Un Certain Regard jury at Cannes, becoming the first-ever Arab person to be granted the position. She wore a Dior Haute Couture night blue tull dress.

Julianne Moore, meanwhile, donned a Dior Haute Couture forest green silk chiffon dress, while Elle Fanning opted for a Dior Haute Couture ensemble composed of an ivory organza shirt with embroidered bib and full pant with black frogging.

For Amira Casar, the fashion house opted for a flounced dress with “circus animal” sequin embroidery, while Wu Ke-Xi wore a laminated silk evening gown in bronze, gold, wisteria, blue and Parma Violet and Lyna Khoudri opted for a black tulle gown.

Fasting and Fitness Diary: Sonja Moses Chats Her Experience, Motivation and a Surprising Realisation for Week One

While she’s no stranger to intermittent fasting, Fitness Expert Sonja Moses has never fasted for the entirety of Ramadan before – until now.

And for the first instalment of Sonja’s Fasting and Fitness diary, she discusses the motivation behind her decision to fast, what she’s reflected on in moments of struggle and the surprising thing she misses the most.

Week One: Sonja Moses’s Fasting and Fitness Diary

Sonja Moses at Barry’s Bootcamp

During my years in the fitness industry and whilst cutting weight for fights, I have experienced a lot of fasting methods combined with training. Intermittent fasting is definitely up there as a safe and effective way to regulate sugar levels and therefore body mass – although one size does not always fit all.

As a fighter, I have had to make weight many times and still be fast and powerful to fight. There is a to the letter formula that I follow that enables me to cut as much as 7kgs in six days, all of which is water weight. But with that, there is light at the end of the tunnel because I can eat and drink sensibly before I fight.

This weight cut process also helps me become mentally ‘fight ready’ due to the suffering I put myself through on the lead up to win. I always start to question my why at this point and each time I deprive myself like this I gain more mental toughness for other areas of my life.

However I have never experienced fasting for a prolonged period as such as Ramadan so when asked to write on the subject, I think it is only right that I speak from experience so that I fully understand the process.

Sonja Moses talks about the surprising elements of fasting for Ramadan for the first time

Sonja Moses talks about the surprising elements of fasting for Ramadan for the first time

Also, a lot of my clients are fasting and still attending sessions with me so it is imperative that I am able to give advice from living the experience that they are going through. I have always travelled a lot with work and wherever I go I always feel a lot of joy to immerse myself in the culture surrounding me because there is always something for me to discover and learn. After recently moving to the region in October and now calling Dubai my home, I take great pride in learning about the culture and the essence of Ramadan.

The main challenge I faced in week one was starting after coming back from leading a fitness and mindfulness retreat in Thailand and being dehydrated and tired from the flight. I went straight into teaching two classes and was really missing water as my throat was so dry from teaching. However, after a few days settling back into my sleep routine and waking up for Suhoor to drink water and eat for energy during the day, I was finding my feet.

To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect but I am used to structured routines for a purpose (fight camp) and knew it would take a few days to adjust. What I wasn’t prepared for was the extent of hunger and dehydration. Whether some of it is psychological, only my diary entries over time will tell but come 2.30pm I am starving and so thirsty.

At this point, I always reflect that others in the world do this without Iftar insight because they have no choice and still work for survival. The past week has been a really humbling and reflective experience and has allowed me to connect with myself to see how mentally strong I can be. My biggest discovery this week has been that I am actually a coffee addict and struggle without it in my life!

Makeup is often the hardest part of your beauty routine to switch up. We all have the brands and products that we’ve loved and used for years, and for a long time handing over our hides-all foundation for an unglamourous vegan alternative was difficult. But now, so many big and small brands are adopting a cruelty-free approach, either promising a completely vegan line or stamp marking certain products as vegan-friendly.

Beauty Blender is one of the brands committed to making vegan products. And if you thought that just meant the nifty little sponges that transform your complexion in a few squeezes – think again. Since launching the Bounce Foundation in 2018, the American brand has remained committed to creating vegan products. For lipsticks, Limecrime is completely vegan too, and seek out Colourfix for a highlighting boost. Milk, which is available through some sites in this region at the moment, is an LA born vegan brand changing the game, too.

As for filling up the rest of your makeup bags, you might have to pick and choose between several brands. One to note is Hourglass, that is currently 80 per cent vegan and is committed to becoming 100 per cent so by 2020. The likes of Tarte, Urban Decay, Charlotte Tilbury, Kat Von D, Anastasia Beverly Hill and Too Faced also have an extensive vegan range and are cruelty-free.

SKINCARE

Aesop is vegan friendly, and carries a range of products for body ,face and hair

Aesop is vegan-friendly and carries a range of products for body, face and hair

When it comes to the one product not to compromise on, we’ve always been told to invest in a good face cream. It sits on your skin all day and all night, after all. But which vegan alternatives are up to the task? We suggest starting with Sukin. As well as vegan-friendly, the Australian skincare brand is natural, cruelty-free, carbon neutral and sold in recyclable packaging. Not to mention it’s tried and tested by the A&E team.

Botanical beauty brand Grown Alchemist is another of our favourites, as it stocks everything from your intensive serums and moisturisers to face mists and masks. If you only add one skincare buy into your routine, though, we rate the grain-free Enzyme Exfoliator.  Aesop is another Australian brand that’s wholly vegan, and if you’ve got sensitive skin that craves a creamy texture, opt for the Cleansing Milk and Sage & Zinc Facial Hydrating Cream from the brand.

BATH & BODY

Lush is actively against animal testing, and most while products are vegan they are all vegetarian friendly

Lush is actively against animal testing, and most while products are vegan they are all vegetarian-friendly

While we might remember to check if our lipsticks are tested on animals, we’ll often forget to ensure our entire toiletry shop falls under the category, too. In our recommendation, Lush should be your first stop. While the products range between vegetarian and vegan, the latter is always clearly marked and the products as a whole are cruelty-free. There’s plenty of choices as well as an element of fun added to your bath and body shop.

Elsewhere, try a gritty body scrub from vegan brand Urban Veda, an uplifting shower gel from The Organic Pharmacy, that is completely cruelty-free and mostly vegan, and pick up essential oils and bath salts from Neal’s Yard’s wide vegan selection.

HAIRCARE

Hair care range Rahua is completely vegan

Hair care range Rahua is completely vegan

Hair is often the first thing that people will notice about us, so treating it well is a must. Especially when you factor in the climate of extreme heat and hard water already raging war against your tresses. Trevor Sorbie – the iconic hairdresser who has his own range of products as well as his own salon in the region now – is a champion of vegan home hair care. With shampoos, conditioners and serums for all hair types, you can easily seek out the exact product for you without leaving your locks lacklustre.

Rainforest Grown Beauty brand Rahua likewise champions omitting animal-derived products from its collection, And we’re huge fans of the Rahua Hydration Detangler + UV Barrier as well as the matching shampoo and conditioner. Sachajuan holds a selection of suitable products too, while coloured hair should opt for Pureology products as an alternative, as the range is sulphate free, too.

Gigi Hadid as You’ve Never Seen Her as she Models Burberry’s First Monogram Collection

Dressed head to toe in Burberry, we saw a glimpse of Gigi Hadid as we’d never seen her before as she donned the British fashion brand’s latest collection.

In her first campaign for Burberry, the 24-year-old model moved between masculine and feminine designs, embodying all four personalities of the collection – the boy, the gentleman, the girl and the lady  – each in turn. Legendary Nick Knight captured the shots for the campaign, while Katy England styled the looks and Isamaya French did the makeup and Gary Gill took care of all things hair.

As well as being the first union between the LA-raised model and the 1879-born fashion house, it’s also the first time Burberry has launched a monogram line. First unveiled in the summer of 2018, the monogram – which interlocks a T and B after founder Thomas Burberry – was designed by Riccardo Tisci in collaboration with the British art director and graphic designer Peter Saville.

On the project, Bella Hadid’s little sister said: “I have always loved and respected Riccardo’s work, and I feel so honoured and grateful that he trusted me with this project. My first Burberry show was my first time working with Riccardo, and the timing just felt perfect. It gave us our first opportunity to really get to know each other.

“The second I heard the creatives for this shoot, I understood how I wanted to bring that to life and show different sides of myself through each character. Nick, Katy, and Peter are all legends, masters at what they do; I cherish my time on set with them and I really wanted to give it my all – it was one of the most fun days I’ve ever had!”

First Fenty Beauty, and now Rihanna has announced that she has united with LVMH – the French multinational luxury goods conglomerate – to launch her own fashion label. Here’s what we know so far.

Barbados-born singer Rihanna launched Fenty Beauty in 2017, and it has quickly become one of our favourite beauty brands with a clear cult following based on merit, not just name.  Gaining such a following, it would only natural that the 31-year-old would expand her empire.

And after teasing Fenty Skin earlier this year, the Diamonds hitmaker has announced that she is launching her own fashion label. On the news, Rihanna said: “Designing a line like this with LVMH is an incredibly special moment for us. Mr Arnault has given me a unique opportunity to develop a fashion house in the luxury sector, with no artistic limits. I couldn’t imagine a better partner both creatively and business-wise, and I’m ready for the world to see what we have built together.”

While Bernard Arnault, Chairman and CEO of LVMH, added: “Everybody knows Rihanna as a wonderful singer, but through our partnership at Fenty Beauty, I discovered a true entrepreneur, a real CEO and a terrific leader. She naturally finds her full place within LVMH. To support Rihanna to start up the Fenty Maison, we have built a talented and multicultural team supported by the Group resources. I am proud that LVMH is leading this venture and wish it will be a great success.” Leading up to the launch, here’s everything we know so far.

Wellness Wednesday: Tips For Coping With Daily Anxieties from LightHouse Arabia

For this week’s Wellness Wednesday instalment,  Clinical Psychologist at LightHouse Arabia Daniela Salazar talks through her advice on coping with and soothing daily anxieties.

Throughout the month of May, a&e is teaming up with LightHouse Arabia – the Dubai-based community mental health and wellness clinic – to offer up advice and tips for dealing with the mental health issues many people face at some point in their life, if not regularly.

And this week, we are focusing in on anxiety. While anxiety can be a normal emotion and reaction to certain events, a constant feeling of anxiety or such a reaction to irrational triggers can negatively affect a person’s mental health.

Speaking to Daniela Salazar, a Clinical Psychologist at LightHouse Arabia, here’s the advice she had to offer to help minimise the daily effects of anxiety.

Coping With Daily Anxiety

Constant check-ins

Being able to have several check-ins throughout the day can be very useful. With our daily activities, we tend to act on “auto” mode most of the time and we aren’t aware of how we are feeling and how what we are thinking about might act as a trigger to anxiety (work, family, school or something else). Writing in a journal when you are feeling stressed or anxious can also help to identify patterns and triggers and create self-awareness.

Create a self-care routine

Listening to music, getting a massage, practising yoga, doing a sport or meditating – these are all activities that help us step back from the problem and helps us clear our minds. Having this scheduled in your calendar is extremely important and useful.

Rest Up

When we are well rested we are able to make decisions and behave in ways that is more in line with our values. Having poor sleep has been linked to various medical and mental health issues. We should be getting around eight hours of sleep every day to improve our overall health. It helps us restore our bodies. It is also very important to limit screen time before you go to bed. The light that the phone or tablet emits keeps the brain awake and limits the quality of your sleep. Consider getting an alarm instead of using your phone as the alarm.

Limit caffeine

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant (as are depressant drinks) meaning it can contribute highly to anxiety. When we consume large doses of either of them, we are more prone to having mood changes due to the effect they have on various neurotransmitters in our brain.

Talk about it

Being able to talk to family and friends about how we feel can be very useful. Also, talking to a therapist for professional help can be very useful to learn more in-depth about anxiety and its treatment.

Dior’s New Fine Jewellery Collection Mimirose Was Made For Layering

See the new Dior collection that brings together two signature elements from classic designs from the French fashion house’s historic portfolio.

For her latest collection, Victoire de Castellane has created something shiny and new by pulling together different elements of the old.

The French jewellery designer – who started her career alongside the late Karl Lagerfeld – took elements from her signature fine chains and precious stones of Mimioui and the delicate, twisted rice grain settings of Rose des Vents when designing Mimirose.

One range acts like a collection talismans and lucky charms – after Christian Dior said himself in his memoirs that he was a “superstitious by nature” adding that he would “always look around for a piece of wood to touch,” while the second is the kind of jewellery that is exchanged for special occasions, becoming family heirlooms exchanges between loved ones over the years

The hybrid of the two also subtly acts as a tribute to Dior Joaillerie – a coffee table book that pays homage to the wonders of the world of fine jewellery – as its 20th anniversary comes around., and works perfectly for layering together. Mix and match within the collection itself, or layer it upon your favourite from the Dior Fine Jewellery collections that inspired newcomer Mimirose.

Met Gala Best Dressed 2019: The Elaborate Outfits You Need To See

Lady Gaga, Celine Dion and Emma Roberts were just some of the celebrities attending the annual benefit event for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and looked amazing while doing so.

Each year, the Met Gala is one of the most highly anticipated fashion events on the calendar. The fundraising event in support of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute invites celebrities and industry insiders along, encouraging them to don their most outlandish, overt outfit.

It was confirmed in late 2018 that this year’s Met Gala (which took place on May 6th) and accompanying Costume Institute exhibition, will be entitled Camp: Notes on Fashion inspired by the 1964 Susan Sontag essay that describes camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” And this year the guest list didn’t disappoint.

The red carpet of the New York event was adorned with outfits in every shade of pink, ruffles and feathers that demanded attention, and glitz and glamour that refused to go unnoticed. Here are some of our favourite looks from the night.

Celine Dion in Oscar De La Renta

Speaking on the red carpet, the French Canadian music icon revealed that she originally interpreted the theme as requiring sleeping bags and overnight gear. Luckily, the Santo Domingo born designer ensured Celine looks fitting for the event – and then some.

Emma Roberts in Giambattista Valli

Julia Roberts niece channels a fairytale princess as she walked the red carpet. Borrowing a gown from Giambattista Valli’ Spring 2019 Haute Couture collection, Emma Roberts stunned in ruffled pretty pink and completed her look with a floral crown.

Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell

Lady Gaga donned no less than four outfits to the Met Gala on May 6th 2019, and each was as bold as the last. Our crown goes to this extravagant gown, however. She also wore a black gown, a slimming pink dressed and black underwear set.

Lupita Nyong’o in Versace

The Black Panther and Star Wars actress stunned on the (pink) red carpet in a too-the-theme Versace dress. The rainbow dress and matching bag instantly dazzled, and Lupita Nyong’o’s look was finished with party-ready makeup and combs weaved into her backcombed hair.

Cardi B in Thom Browne

We love that we can always rely on Cardi B to go above and beyond when it comes to a dress code. The New York-born rapper blanketed the carpet with his deep red gown that required a handful of assistants to help her get to and fro – and we applaud the dedication.

Saoirse Ronan in Gucci

The fire-breathing dress added a mythical feel to Saoirse Ronan’s gown of choice for the New York event, and the Lady Bird actor naturally stunned in the red floor length gown.
